Whoulda thunk that the third time we'd see the BlackBerry PlayBook on video, it'd be in the hands of cube-headed dopplegangster Will.I.Shill? Not us, but we're terribly excited to see the 7-inch tablet show off its augmented reality chops in the Black Eyed Peas' latest music video. We're not really sure what alternate reality hijinks turned the musicians into 8-bit portraits nor pixelated their world, but the BEP sure look adorable as Xbox LIVE-friendly avatars. Watch it after the break, or skip to 2:12, 3:16 and 3:54 if you just want to get your tablet on.

Qualcomm reveals next-gen chips, teases us with 5x increase in performance
I find myself perpetually wishing that the future was here today, don't you? I mean, 2 years ago, the idea of 1GHz chips in phones was mind-blowing, but -- despite this -- I can't help but feel lustful for the next generation.
So, it is with this lusty game of techno-cat and robo-mouse in mind that I present to you information regarding the next generation of Qualcomm's ever-popular Snapdragon platform. Be warned though, these details are smokin'.

Did all your music disappear with iOS 4.2? Here?s how to get it back
It is as they say: the best laid plans can often go awry. Even the most heavily tested builds of iOS ? ones that many thousands of iOS developers Beta tested, and ones that had multiple last minute Gold Master revisions ? can have surprise bugs lurking when things go live.
Such is the case with iOS 4.2, which has at least one strange bug in its bed. Upon updating to the just released software, a solid number of users are reporting that their music library has gone missing. Fear not, music lovers! There's an easy fix.sell my policy endowments buy endowment policy

Is the Apollo News Reader defunct?
I liked the Apollo New Reader for iPad. It allowed you to read RSS feeds full screen, something that the Pulse news reader doesn't do in landscape mode. Another advantage was that it could usually play video from within the app. Note: One of our sharp commenters notes that you can play a video in Pulse by holding the play button down for more than 2 seconds. Cool. Alas, good things come to an end; the Apollo News Reader is no longer listed in the App Store, and the freshest stories are 6 days old. The iPhone version of the app is also M.I.A.
I recently reported that the app was not updating, but the developers said they expected to have it back up soon. The issue seemed to be some disagreements with some content providers over whether Apollo could use their material.
There hasn't been any response from the developers on this latest outage, so if I could hazard a guess I'd say that the app won't be back. There is nothing on the Hawthorne Labs website that would give me any insight into what's going on. Once billed as "the Newspaper of the Future," for now the Apollo app doesn't seem to have any future at all. I hope it comes back, but I'm not holding my breath. Is the Apollo News Reader defunct? originally appeared on TUAW on Mon, 22 Nov 2010 02:00:00 EST. Social Networking Trailblazers Pull the Plug on Cliqset
Cliqset, a website that allows users to view and interact with streams of activity data from multiple social networks in one place, is losing its two co-founders after an unsuccessful run at growing the company. Darren Bounds and Charlie Cauthen led what might have been the single biggest show of startup support for bleeding-edge technical standards aimed at building a federated social Web, rich with consumer choice - but the company's business execution was insufficient to ensure its survival.
Leaders of the distributed social Web standards community, the effort to build interoperable competition for the big social networking silos, say that Cliqset's apparent demise is unfortunate, but that they look forward to seeing what Bounds and Cauthen do next.

Cliqset - Getting started from cliqset on Vimeo.Cliqset worked with all kinds of different technical standards, but the startup's brightest shining moment may have been in December 2009, when it released an API that transformed user activity data feeds from more than 70 different social websites into standardized Activity Streams data and offered them through a new API.
Standards across sites for user activity data feeds are aimed to act as a common foundation to provide scale for innovation outside the big mainstream social networks. In other words, if all photos, friends and comments are marked up in a common standardized way, those activities can be viewed across all the small social networking startups - giving them more people and content to display than they would if it was just a random startup alone against the big guys like Facebook.
I've compared standards in social networking data to the historical rise of standardized railroad measurements - which allowed trains to ride across different networks and fostered a new era of nation-wide commerce in the United States.
Unfortunately, economic incentive hasn't driven people to engage with interoperable small networks instead of favoring the big players, Facebook and Twitter. Meanwhile, little Cliqset suffered from a substantially unappealing user experience, which it was never able to overcome.
"Darren and Charlie have done an amazing job taking open technologies and distilling them into a consumer experience," Yahoo's Eran Hammer-Lahav said today.
"The problem is that social aggregation no longer offers any significant value with the Facebook/Twitter market consolidation. The biggest loser from the collapse of Cliqset is Google, as their world of potential social federation partners shrinks even further. Cliqset was a strong supporter and early adopter of many of the core social technologies such as Salmon, WebFinger, and PubSubHubbub."
Unfortunately, all those standards are feeling less viable today than they were in the heady times they were introduced. Independent social Web technical leaders have largely joined up with Google or Facebook and standards organizations have grown quieter. Cauthen and Bounds have not announced what they will do next, but it's probably safe to assume that it will include working to move social Web data standards forward.
Startup Challenges
Not everyone agrees that this has anything to do with challenges faced by the larger standards community. "I don't believe this really has anything to do with standards," Chris Saad of Echo and the Data Portability Working Group says. "Lifestreams in the b2c space has long been crowded and has now consolidated around the Facebook news feed."
Cliqset's Bounds appears to agree. "In order to build a community, you need massive differentiation today," Bounds told blogger Louis Gray this morning. "It's fairly obvious in hindsight. Projects I would be working on in the future would be leveraging the existing social graph, and the need for success wouldn't be contingent on relationships and community within itself. In no means do I think Facebook is impenetrable and somebody can't build something to compete with it, but it's not an easy task."

Dell Inspiron Duo can be pre-ordered
If you're one of those out there who are interested in the Dell Inspiron Duo for the sake of owning something which has a totally radical form factor, why not place a pre-order from the Microsoft Store today? This convertible netbook is currently retailing for $549, although there is an option to fork out another $99 if you're willing to settle for Microsoft’s “Signature Premium” service that includes priority tech support and a theft recovery system. Of course, if a Benjamin's too much for you to spare, there is always the $49 “Audio Station” dock option. Shipping is expected to commence from the first week of December onwards, so it ought to make for the perfect stocking stuffer if you're looking for one.

Jolibook now on sale in the UK, first batch of orders ships Monday
Looks like Jolicloud knows how to keep a product under wraps -- just ten days after revealing the Jolibook to the world, it's already on sale at a pair of e-tailers. Yes, it's just a netbook, and a fairly standard one at that -- you can cross the 10.1-inch WSVGA screen, Intel GMA 3150 graphics, 1GB of RAM, 250GB hard drive and 0.3 megapixel webcam right off your laundry list. But it does have the instant-on Jolicloud 1.1 OS on board, and a dual-core 1.5GHz Atom N550 processor to power through basic tasks, and for a confirmed £279 (about $443) it would also seem to have a price to match. Find it Vye or Amazon UK if you're already sold, and expect to actually receive it before long -- founder Tariq Krim tweets that orders placed this weekend will ship out Monday morning.Jolibook now on sale in the UK, first batch of orders ships Monday originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Nov 2010 14:02:00 EDT. Man behind the Dell Streak launch shown the door
The Dell Streak launch was a disaster. The Dell Aero was a flop. This week we learn that Dell’s mobile communications group is being rolled back into the broader company and the man in charge, Ron Garriques, is on his way out.
Reuters reports that Mr. Garriques was a high-profile addition to Dell when they hired him in early 2007 after he had previously led Motorola Inc’s mobile phone unit. One year ago he took over Dell’s newly formed communications solutions group to manage the companies smartphones and tablet devices, and we know how that turned out.
When he leaves Dell in early 2011, Garriques will receive a severance payment of $1.44 million and another $3.15 million under his consultancy agreement.
Dell has yet to impress me since they started producing Android phones, so maybe the reorganizationof upper management will get them back on the right path. What...Android and Me tee shirts?! The And Me Artist Series: all tees $17, a new tee each week.

Honda shows off Fit EV concept at LA Auto Show, we hope to see it again
The Fit is a well regarded car here at Engadget HQ, models finding their ways into the garages and parking lots of three separate staffers, all of whom are now saying things like "ooooh" and "shiny" while looking at the lovely blue model Honda brought along to show off at the Los Angeles Auto Show. It's just a concept at this point, delivering the current standard 100 miles of range while managing a 90mph top speed, more or less matching the Nissan Leaf we recently sampled and inspiring us all to call our electricians for quotes on quick-charger installs. Sadly we have plenty of time to save up for those, with the Fit EV not hitting production until sometime in 2012, and Honda not making any promises about US availability. To that we say "boo."
Update: Scratch that, Honda has confirmed 2012 US availability for the Fit. Full press release is below! "Whoo!"

Speculated CDMA-GSM World iPad to Bring Apple Closer to Verizon
Wedge Partners analyst Brian Blair is speculating that Apple's next-gneration iPad could forego a GSM-only 3G radio for "world phone" multimode CDMA-GSM chip made by Qualcomm. Versions of the chipsets have been found on a few devices by U.S. CDMA carrier Verizon Wireless, such as the Droid 2 Global and Droid Pro by Motorola, which allows the carrier to offer its customers the ability to use its CDMA/EV-DO network in the U.S. while being able to roam on GSM/HSPA networks overseas. According to Blair, who predicts that Apple will be building 48 million of these units in 2011, "Recent checks...suggest Apple is going to be ratcheting down production of the existing 3G iPad over the next two months in anticipation of ramping up a new World iPad that is powered by Qualcomm and will run on both GSM and CDMA based networks around the world." He notes that a thinner design with a front-facing design will also be part of the refresh. If true, a CDMA-GSM iPad hybrid would eliminate the need for Verizon Wireless to sell a WiFi-only iPad and bundle it with the company's MiFi portable hotspot router for mobile broadband access. Additionally, the addition of 3G support will also bring GPS support to the tablet, giving users on Verizon Wireless the option to use the tablet as a navigation device or better integrate the tablet with location-based services and apps with an internal GPS module that's built onto the multi-mode chipset.

What?s New At Tumblr: Funding, Hires, Office, Board Member, And A Focus On Fashion
For the past several weeks, there's been a lot of talk about a large new round of funding that the social startup Tumblr was raising. That culminated today with a report in Fortune with numbers on the round. We had been hearing very similar numbers ? around $25 million on a $100 million pre-money evaluation ? but it turns out those numbers were likely low, we had heard from sources close to the funding.
But while the numbers are still a bit up in the air, we do know that as Fortune and Business Insider reported earlier, Sequoia Capital is leading this new round. And we've heard that previous investors Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures are on board once again. Further, like Business Insider, we're hearing that Sequoia's Roelof Botha will join Tumblr's Board as a part of this investment, which will likely close in the next couple of weeks.endowment sell my policy endowments

Low Volume and No Retweets: Ping Is Not Going Viral on Twitter
Last week, Apple launched a partnership with Twitter that allows the users of its Ping social network to send their likes to their Twitter streams. Using Microsoft's Archivist, we tapped into the Twitter firehose over the last few days and took a look at how Ping is doing on Twitter. Before the launch of this integration, there was a lot of talk about how Ping was a major failure for Apple. Indeed, the total number of tweets from Ping per-day hovers somewhere around 3,000, with a spike up to 4,000 on Wednesday after the Beatles catalog arrived on iTunes.
Sponsor
Clearly, Ping is not going viral on Twitter yet. Indeed, users barely ever retweet a Ping like. Only 1.4% of the Ping likes we analyzed were retweets. By comparison, almost 6% of links to the increasingly popular Instagram mobile photo sharing site were retweets. While we can't compare the two directly, it is also worth noting that we regularly saw more than 400 Instagram tweets within half an hour, while we barely saw more than 50-60 Ping likes on Twitter in the same time period. While that's great for Instagram, that's not a good sign for Ping.
Our own Marshall Kirkpatrick described Ping on Twitter as a "non-starter" earlier this week and judging from this data, a lot of Twitter and iTunes users feel the same way.
Note: The data for 11/19 is incomplete. We also only looked at tweets in English.
A Few More Observations:
Those who used Ping's like function to sent Tweets to Ping only used it a few times from what we could see. There are some power-users who sent over 100 Ping likes to their Twitter friends over the course of the week, but those are in the minority (and probably annoyed their followers to no end).
It doesn't come as a surprise that the top words in these tweets (Beatles, Box Set, John)have to do with the Beatles - after all, the full Beatles catalog came to iTunes earlier this week and quickly dominated the charts there.

Celsius X VI II LeDix watch phone
Feature phones are actually pretty "meh" in our books, but once in a while something different comes along that stops you in your tracks. What are we referring to? The Celsius X VI II LeDix watch phone, of course. Having hit the FCC, the main thing that helps it stand apart from the rest would be the handset's cover that shows off an intricate collection of gears and springs, that will power the phone’s analog timepiece. The LeDix’s flying tourbillion assembly is supposedly unique in its own way, with a self-winding mechanism that helps keep the phone’s watch ticking each time you move, while an auto winder helps make sure the time is kept in check even when the watch is not in use. This looks like some sort of modern steampunk interpretation, and we aren't surprised to hear this puppy costs a whopping $275,000 to bring home.

Joojoo 2, powered by Android
Fusion Garage will aim its Joojoo tablet towards business and verticals that are not consumer oriented. The company has reached an agreement with ASTEC Co. Ltd (a Japanese company) in which ASTEC will modify the tablet's operating system (OS) to tailor it to enterprise applications. The local storage will also increase to 16GB (from the original 4GB). The plan is to sell the remaining stock of Joojoo, then move onto the next generation hardware powered by Android.
Yes you heard that right: Joojoo 2 will be powered by Google's OS. It's probably a better choice, because we just don't see how Joojoo can attract developers in its current state. The new products will show up sometime in 2011, and it looks like Joojoo will try to find a niche for itself in markets that require 12" devices -- at least, that's the hope of Fusion Garage.

Verizon ad has AT&T seeing red (but not necessarily LTE)
The coverage map war between Verizon Wireless and AT&T continues as Big Red deals a heavy, fourth-generation blow to AT&T's ... 3G network? At first glance, Verizon Wireless wants you to think the unrivaled red footprint seen here is their 4G/LTE coverage map, but it's not, it's their current 3G coverage. Further inspection reveals their 4G launch markets -- indicated by small, green bullseyes, peppered throughout the map. Alternatively, AT&T's 3G coverage is indicated by small specks of blue scattered across the country.Verizon Wireless has made AT&T their full-time whipping boy, but part of me wonders why T-Mobile and Sprint weren't included here. AT&T and Verizon Wireless are always battling to be No. 1, so it's obvious why they've targeted AT&T. But the other two members of the big four actually have 4G service up and running. T-Mobile claims to have the nation's largest 4G network, while Sprint is home to PC World's voted two best smartphones, and the nation's first 4G network. But hey, every carrier has at least one or two awesome Android phones, so that's all we really care about. Schmidt: Gingerbread Sooner, Chrome OS Later
Google CEO Eric Schmidt, talking at the Web 2.0 conference today, made a couple announcements regarding devices that you, reader, may be interested in hearing. After all, with Android poised to become the most populous mobile OS in the world, any major update is worth discussing.
Gingerbread, as they are calling Android version 2.3 (apparently not 3.0, said to be Honeycomb), was shown off on what appeared to be a Nexus S, which would make sense as the first phone to roll out with the update. New features include near-field communication and possibly face recognition, in addition to the resolution compatibility improvements and other under-the-hood changes.

What is it like to work at Apple?
Ever wondered what it's like to work at Apple? AOL Jobs spoke to Joe Moreno, a software engineer who worked at Apple from 1998 to 2007. Joe touched numerous products and projects, notably WebObjects and the Apple Online Store (No, he wasn't the guy who puts the yellow sticky note up when new products arrive). His accounts of Apple make it sound like working there is almost as innovative as their products. From HR to communications, there's a lot other companies could learn from.
As TUAW is a blog about Apple, I found the following quite interesting:
"As an Apple employee, you definitely get the feeling that blogging about the company is frowned upon. It goes to the extent that, if you have a personal blog about an unrelated topic, you don't even want to mention that you work for Apple."
There are very few company blogs, even with notable exceptions such as Surfin' Safari, their WebKit blog. Still, this is in contrast to Microsoft, where there are numerous blogs by product divisions and personnel. Then again, it's been a long time since Microsoft routinely surprised and delighted their customers and fans, so perhaps Apple is on to something. What is it like to work at Apple? originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 17 Nov 2010 20:00:00 EST. QNAP's TS-119P+ Turbo NAS offers a 'fashionably shiny design,' just one HDD bay
When it comes to external storage, the amount of gloss provided by the enclosure in question is really of paramount importance. QNAP knows this, and so it is touting the new TS-119P+'s "fashionably shiny design" -- oh, and its single HDD bay, iSCSI support, 1.6GHz processor, and 512MB of RAM too. It pulls down just 12 watts of power while in operation, five while sleeping, and thanks to the bevy of software sharing apps that come along with the thing you can stream media files straight to your iPhone or Android device, even host your Windows AD to unify login accounts. QNAP isn't saying how much you'll pay for this combination of features and style, but expect it to ship next week. BYO storage, of course.
Update: Uwe wrote in to let us know that this is actually available now in Europe at a cost of around 240 €, which corresponds to about $325.

Now Best Buy Is Offering Free Shipping
Best Buy wants your business this holiday season. They want your business so bad that they will cover the cost of shipping on most of the items they sell. CDs, DVDs, AV equipment -- the vast majority of the online store now ships for free. Of course in-store pickup is still available at no charge as well with the free shipping offer valid through December 21. Note, free shipping does not apply to notebooks, netbooks, iPads, iPods, game hardware, Dynex TVs, appliances, and "some other items." The fun question here is whether Walmart forced Best Buy into this free shipping game. sell my policy

Limili Identifies That Song That?s Playing, Adds It To Your Grooveshark Collection
Between Soundhound and Shazam, I wouldn't have thought the world was really begging for another service that could identify that song playing on the radio. Sometimes, though, something comes along that solves that problem we didn't know we had and makes the whole thing worthwhile.
You see, Soundhound and Shazam do a great job of identifying tracks.. but then what? You can buy the track on iTunes... which is great, for all the people who buy their music from iTunes. For folks who use services like Grooveshark, Spotify, or Rhapsody, though, that song they heard in the bar is gone from their noggin' by the time the next beer hits the table.

Surprise! Wii Speak Microphone Discontinued
It appears that the Wii Speak microphone we saw debuted at E3 2008 with the new Animal Crossing hasn't seen the interest Nintendo hoped for, and has been discontinued. Nexus S teaser video now available for your viewing pleasure
Yesterday during the Web 2.0 summit we got a brief look at Google CEO Eric Schmidt showing off Gingerbread -- Android 2.3 as well as, the now infamous "unannounced" device also known as the Nexus S. While it's time on stage was brief, it was more than enough to have us wanting to see more. A few goodies were noted after Eric stepped off stage as well. Remember that "blink off" video of the screen we previously saw powering down? It's pretty awesome. What's even more awesome is that it's still included, as noted by the folks over at Engadget. Hit the break for the full embed of the video. Thanks to everyone who sent this in!

HTC Droid Merge coming to Verizon on November 18th?
The HTC Merge (or Lexikon) was first leaked back in September and even captured on video, but we have yet to get an official release date from Verizon. It appears that could change soon as Verizon is hosting a party on November 18th and the invitation says they will celebrate the launches of the “HTC Droid Merge World-Phone” and the re-launching of the HTC Droid Incredible.
As some of you already know, the HTC Merge is Verizon’s version of the Desire Z, minus the unique z-hinge which has been replaced with your basic slide mechanism. T-Mobile’s version of the Desire Z, the G2, went on sale last month so it us unclear why Verizon has delayed the launch so long.

The Nexus S: a closer look
Google CEO Eric Schmidt showed the world the Nexus S from a distance just a little while ago, but we knew you'd want more, and so we managed to convince the man to show us the device in person just a few minutes ago. What should you know about the heir apparent to the Nexus One? Well, it's exceptionally thin -- we weren't able to compare, but we'd say it's at least comparable with an iPhone 4 if not slimmer still -- and it's thinner in the middle than at either end, giving it a mildly concave profile. There's a glossy plastic bezel up front housing an AMOLED screen, a pair of discrete volume buttons on the left side, and a black plastic back (textured similarly to the BlackBerry Bold, though patchier) which seemed too roughly manufactured to be anything but a prototype. We saw the handset for all of three seconds and weren't able to snap a single picture nor touch it for ourselves, but as Schmidt walked away he left us with one last lingering look at Gingerbread -- the screen shutting off. When he pressed the power button, the image winked out like an old CRT TV, an animation which you'll see a carbon copy of right after the break. AT&T prices Samsung Galaxy Tab
In one of the more notable non-surprise news of today, AT&T will be offering the Samsung Galaxy Tab to the masses from November 21st onwards for $649.99 without the need for any contract. For those who want to remain connected with the Galaxy Tab at all times, there are two pay-as-you-go data plans to choose from, where the $14.99 option will net you 250MB of data while $24.99 is a whole lot more worth it at 2GB data, where both plans are good for one month. Not only that, AT&T will throw in a free $50 Media Hub Movie Rental credit with each purchase of the Galaxy Tab. Sounds like a pretty solid deal - you game? [Press Release]

Xbox 360 used for gaming only for slightly more than half the time
The Xbox 360 video gaming console from Microsoft has garnered some pretty interesting results in terms of statistics according to COO of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business, Dennis Durkin, who claimed that the Xbox360 is being used for gaming only for 60% of the time, while the remaining 40% is used for something else apart from gaming. What does those include? Among them would include watching streaming movies with Netflix, using social media sites including Twitter and Facebook, rocking to your favorite tunes using Zune or Last.fm among others. Not only that, Microsoft states that Xbox 360 owners spend an average of three hours online per day. Interesting - we wonder what the breakdown with Wii and PS3 owners look like.

Samsung shows off 19-inch OLED TV prototype
Samsung Mobile Display has flexed its industrial muscles yet again with a new 19-inch OLED TV prototype that was touted to be produced using a spanking new inkjet method. This panel is actually an AMOLED panel that has a count of 960 x 540 pixels at 58ppi resolution. Apart from that, it also has a brightness level of 200 cd/m², supporting up to 16.77 million colors (that's more than what your eyes care to view) and a 8-bit color scale. According to Samsung, this is only a prototype at the moment which is undergoing development, so expect to see the final, polished product look and hopefully perform a whole lot better.

LG Vortex coming soon (and free) to Verizon
There's something wonderful about cheap Android phones, and there ain't nothing cheaper than free. Using that logic, the LG Vortex that is soon making its way to Verizon is about as wonderful as phones get.
OK, so my logic is flawed, but you can't be upset at getting a smartphone that would have cost about $200 only 2 years ago for nuttin' (after $100 mail-in rebate, that is). Cheap smartphones FTW!

How to manually apply the Droid Incredible maintenance update
For those of you who just can't wait to get that maintenance update for the HTC Droid Incredible, we've got the download location and instructions. It's all on the up and up, it's just that you're manually applying the update instead of waiting on it. It's the exact same update. Here you go: Grab the OTA file here from the Android Central Forums. Make sure it's named update.zip Copy it to the root (base directory) of your SD card. Don't put it in any folders, and don't put it on the internal memory. Shut your phone off While holding the volume down button, turn the phone back on. In the white Bootloader screen, select recovery from the list. In the recovery screen (the triangle with exclamation mark), press volume up and power. You'll go to the recovery menu. In the recovery menu, select "apply sdcard:update.zip" The phone will find the file, and when finished prompt you to reboot. Reboot via the menu, then patiently wait for the phone to reboot, and enjoy.A reminder that if you're rooted, this'll break it. Need more help? Ask a VC: How Kiteboarding and Venture Capital Became Less Risky (TCTV)
My guest on Ask A VC this week is Bill Tai of Charles River Ventures. He's also a professional kiteboarder. You may ask: Why would a guy who has been a VC since 1991 need kiteboarding sponsors? That was my first question.
Generally in this video we talk about how the venture business has changed during the last 20 years and how kiteboarding has changed over the last 10 years. There are a lot of parallels. Both games have become safer and more mainstream, but does that mean they're less fun?

Boxcar 4.0 Pushes iPhone Notifications To The Next Level
People say that I never say anything bad about the iPhone. Here's something: its notification system is awful. In particular, I'm talking about the way notifications are managed. They aren't. Any Push Notification that comes in overrides another one. Apps can get badged with updates, but you'll have no idea what's new. That's why Boxcar is a vital app.
We've written about Boxcar a number of times over the past year or so. They're now launching version 4.0 of the app, and it's by far the best yet. The entire app has been overhauled from the ground up. The result is a killer management system for Push Notifications. Apple needs to buy this company.sell my endowment policy sell my endowment endowment policy

Apple I personal computer on auction at Christie's
One of the earliest Apple relics (no, we're not talking about Steve Job's first turtleneck sweatshirt ever) is already on auction at Christie's, where the Apple I personal computer will start from an estimated $160,000 with the potential of a $240,000 upside. Of course, only around 200 of these were hand-built by Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, with a rather interesting price figure of $666.66. Talk about a phenomenal return on investment that even Warren Buffet would have failed to spot. Even after you take $666.66 in 1976 dollars and adjust it for inflation, it still won't touch the $160,000 opening price. Currently, around 30 to 50 of these puppies are still in existence, so if you're feeling flush, you might want to place a bid for this.

Black November Is On: Wal-Mart Starts Offering Free Shipping
Today Wal-Mart is offering free shipping with no minimum on walmart.com on around 60,000 items. The deal will run until December 20th and may continue until Christmas. This is, in short, an attempt to grab commerce through this lucrative month and into the next from other retailers like Amazon and Toys'r'Us.
The holidays are usually an extremely brisk time for online sales and retailers are hoping this year will be better than last. Most retailers reported at least a 16% increase in sales last month, which bodes well for the rest of the season. Another interesting data point is the estimated Kinect sales numbers topping out at 425,000 since launch. This either suggests consumers aren't ready to dance around in front of their TVs or, a more likely scenario, the Kinect will be the must-have item this season and parents are waiting before they buy.endowment mortgage endowment insurance endowment

iTunes Connect will be open over Thanksgiving weekend
A few weeks ago it was reported that iTunes Connect would be closed over Thanksgiving weekend and the Christmas holiday. While the closure wouldn't affect consumers who want to shop for apps, it would affect developers who wanted to submit new apps or change prices of their apps during that period.
iTunes Connect had been closed for a number of days over Christmases past, but the Thanksgiving closure was one that irked a lot of devs as it came during Black Friday and Cyber Monday -- the four day weekend that is the traditional start off to the US holiday shopping season.
To the relief of developers everywhere, Apple last night notified iOS devs that iTunes Connect will be closing for Christmas between December 23-28, but made no mention of a Thanksgiving weekend closure. This means that developers can still adjust prices of their apps on those days to entice holiday app shoppers, submit new apps, and don't have to worry about a Top Apps list freeze during the Thanksgiving weekend.iTunes Connect will be open over Thanksgiving weekend originally appeared on TUAW on Wed, 10 Nov 2010 16:45:00 EST. LG dips toes in color electronic paper niche
LG Display must have taken a quick look around, realizing that the color electronic paper market does have potential for another player - which is why the South Korean display company giant will be introducing two coor prototype displays which were paraded at FPD International in Japan. Both of them will measure 9.7-inches diagonally, where the first has full color capability at 800 x 600 resolution - which is the exact specifications of E Ink's latest. As for the other model, this one does have a spot of color, although the top three quarters are monochrome at 1200 x 1200 resolution, aided by a 200 x 600 color strip at the bottom. We do wonder what kind of layout you will get with this display. There is no revelation on price or availability at press time, so playing the patience game will definitely reveal more information.

Here at the NewTeeVee conference in San Francisco, Hulu CEO Jason Kilar just dropped some interesting and some perviously unreported Hulu stats, including the fact that the ad and subscription supported service now has 30 million users monthly and estimates it will rake in $240 million dollars in 2010, up from a $108 million dollars in 2009.
Kilar also revealed that the service has 260 million content streams, 800 million ad streams and 235 content partners.buy endowment policy endowment protection sell my endowment policy

Microsoft Flashes A Nice Big Middle Finger At Android?s Fragmentation
A month ago, in my initial piece about Windows Phone 7, I was cautiously optimistic about the platform but had some questions about Microsoft's ultimate intentions. Namely: "will they use their power to try and bend the carriers to their will? Or will they take the Google approach and let them walk all over the place dictating features and bloatware?"
I'm happy to report that at least initially, it looks like it will be the former.

ARDefender augmented reality shoot-em-up hands-on
ARDefender has been out for a couple of months but surprisingly it's fallen under the radar of a lot of iPhone users. Combining augmented reality technology with a basic aim-and-shoot, ARDefender allows you to transform your physical desktop or office floor into a battleground. It costs just a buck and it's a great way to both have fun and to showcase the iPhone's [1] ability to integrate with the world around it.
To use the game, print out a special PDF template on any printer, trim to size, and place it on any flat surface. As you aim your device's camera at the the template, tanks and planes start zooming around your virtual world. The template becomes a 3-D tower, so you don't actually see it on the device screen.
Aim your tower's cannons by tapping on the screen and shoot with a button in the lower-right corner of the screen. Other weapon controls and information are located at the periphery.
I have terrible coordination and have not managed to get past the third level, but most people will be able to shoot their way much higher. The fun is, of course, seeing these attackers interact with your real world environment and blasting them away before they manage to reach, for example, your coffee mug.
There's not a whole lot more to ARDefender, but it's fun and well worth the one dollar investment. It's not a terribly deep game but it's a fun one.
[1] Versions exist for the iPhone 4 (also the iPod touch 4th gen) and the Samsung Bada. Symbian S60 and Nintendo DSi iterations are forthcoming.ARDefender augmented reality shoot-em-up hands-on originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 09 Nov 2010 17:00:00 EST. myTouch 3G Froyo 2.2 update works on the T-Mobile G1
Here's a pop quiz - which is the first Android-powered smartphone to hit the market? Well, no prizes for folks who blurted out the T-Mobile G1. This grand-daddy of them all might not have an official Android 2.2 Froyo update, but that has not stopped more enterprising folks to port over the recently released myTouch 3G's Android 2.2 Froyo update to the G1. To make matters more interesting, everything on the G1 works, going to show how great and stable the port is, boasting the entire gamut of Android 2.2 features. You will need to root your device beforehand though, accompanied by other must-haves including 1.33.2005 Danger SPL and 2.22 radio. Talk about giving your G1 a new lease of life! Of course, do make sure you perform the relevant backups before trying something like that as you never can tell when Murphy will strike.

Motorola Flipside now available from AT&T
If you've been patiently waiting to get your hands on the Motorola Flipside, then today is a great day for you. AT&T has made the device available via their website for only $99.99 on a new 2-year contract. We've gone hands on, we've seen the specs but with all that is still in the pipeline to be released, we'd have to say the Flipside is one of those niche devices. You've either been really interested in this device from the get go and want one or you've never cared about it to begin with. Either way, at $99.99 AT&T will move some units for those who just want a nice and functional Android device [AT&T]Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Solar powered gym adds to green credentials
So you want to be as green as possible, and that involves you getting around by walking from block to block instead of driving. Why not go greener with this solar-powered gym in France? It boasts enormous windows which offer adequate lighting during the day, while solar panels will collect enough juice to power its bulbs at night. Designed by French architect Jean Marc Rivet, this unique piece of property also comes with a rooftop garden and interiors which are almost as attractive as its exterior.

Don?t Call It A Gimmick: Rana Sobhany Spins Her iPad Music Into A Full-Time Career
I was blown away when I first saw Rana Sobhany on stage.
With nothing more than 2 iPads and a mixer, Rana was mixing tracks and busting beats live in front of the hundreds of attendees at AdAge's IDEA conference. You wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between her and a DJ with a full set of gear. Mac OS X 10.6.6 seeded while 10.6.5 still awaiting release
The Mac OS X 10.6.5 update hasn't been publicly released yet (although it's expected any day now), but according to 9to5 Mac Apple is already seeding builds of 10.6.6 to developers.
This is indicative of a few things. First, OS X 10.6.5 is likely finalized and ready for public release. Second, the tiny size of the 10.6.6 update (only 3.7 MB) and its small list of changes (mostly related to the forthcoming Mac App Store) indicate that the 10.6.6 update will likely come relatively soon after 10.6.5's release.
Finally, it's probable that access to the Mac App Store will require updating to OS X 10.6.6 -- it's already been established that Snow Leopard is required for the Mac App Store, and the small "dot" upgrade to 10.6.6 likely contains the OS-level hooks necessary for compatibility with the new store's one-click install, copy protection and updating features.
Of course, that also means we might have to wait until 10.6.7 for any fixes to the things that the 10.6.5 and 10.6.6 updates may break on some people's systems...Mac OS X 10.6.6 seeded while 10.6.5 still awaiting release originally appeared on TUAW on Thu, 04 Nov 2010 23:45:00 EST. RockMelt, a Social Web Browser
Tomorrow, there's a new competitor in the web browser arena: RockMelt. It's a web browser built to fit perfectly "the way people use the web today" (they say), namely with Facebook, Google & Twitter completely integrated from the ground up. With this tight integration, RockMelt makes tasks like sending a Facebook or a Twitter message faster than before because you're always logged-in. Looking at several Google Search results should also be quicker because the search results say visible while you look at those pages.
Will it change the way we use the web? Probably not, but maybe it will make us more social (employers are going to "love" it). In my view, the main strength of RockMelt is its new user interface: it would be difficult to build with an array of plug-ins made by several companies. Also, launching a browser that's based on the fact that Google and Facebook (should we call it “GooBook”?) are two dominant forces might not be such a bad idea (business-wise), even if that seems closed-minded... In some ways, it reminds me of when AOL "was" (almost) the internet - not a pleasant thought.
This browser doesn't claim to be the fastest, although it should be plenty fast, as it is based on the code that was used to build Google Chrome. Soon, you'll be able to experience it. In the meantime, there's only the official video. If you try it, leave us a comment.

Can your phone do this? We heard the Motorola Defy was water-resistant and dust-proof, but my friend Vincent from Android Community put that claim to the test. Watch the clip after the jump to see him toss the Defy into his pool while it was recording a 720P video.

Samsung Galaxy Tab WiFi-only version delayed till next year
The WiFi-only version of the Galaxy Tab was first spotted in a Best Buy buyer’s guide last month, but we were unable to confirm if it was actually coming out. My friend Kellen from Android Life just informed me that a new leak suggests it has been delayed till after the holidays.
Best Buy’s internal memo says we should see the WiFi-only Tab come post-holiday, but I’m starting to doubt if that will ever happen. Samsung already confirmed they are working on a Honeycomb tablet which we expect early next year and the timing for a WiFi-only Tab just doesn’t make sense anymore.

Panasonic Lumix GF2 vs. GF1... fight!
If yesterday's preview of the GF2 wasn't enough for you, here's a little more eye candy to feast upon. We paired up Panasonic's all-new Micro Four Thirds shooter with the GF1 that preceded it and collected a nice little gallery for your perusal below. The major difference between the two is in their dimensions -- the GF2 feels a lot closer to your typical compact camera -- though there are plenty of smaller modifications as well, such as the refashioned grip on the camera's right side, the replacement of the jog dial up top with a stereo mic array, and the introduction of a luminous iA button for switching on the intelligent auto mode. The back of the GF2 is also quite a bit tidier, which has been achieved mostly by eliminating some buttons in favor of the touchscreen interface. Check it all out below or jump past the break for some video action.

Mexican Gangs Make YouTube Tool of Narcoterrorism
The most popular post in the history of ReadWriteWeb is titled "Top 10 YouTube Video of All Time." Online video in general, and industry-leader YouTube in particular, are a mainstay of the online world. It's been used for dissemination of news, for comedy, for medicine, and now, for narcoterrorist gang warfare.
Yesterday, a video was posted on YouTube of two men, their hands bound, announcing that they had "killed the Michoacanos." A sign between the men gave instructions for finding the bodies of what looked to be 18 missing and murdered tourists.
Sponsor
The bound men were apparently gang members who said they killed the men as revenge against yet another cartel, a Michoacan outfit called "La Familia." Their off-camera questioner seemed to be a member of the Independent Cartel of Acapulco, or CIDA, a drug gang. Which gang the men belonged to is uncertain.
Twenty missing men, mechanics from Michoacan on vacation, were visiting Acapulco, in adjacent Guerrero state, when they were kidnapped at gunpoint on September 30. These men may well prove to be the same that were murdered.
The penetration of the social Web into unsavory aspects of life should not be surprising, but it is. The idea of watching Between Two Ferns on the same service as narcoterrorist sending "messages" is repugnant. Why? After all, on TV we watch Sesame Street one day and broadcasts of war the next. So why the revulsion? It may not be solely the act that is objectionable.
When we use a tool, we invest some of ourselves in it. Video sharing is not as passive, at least in its construction, as something like television. Most of us have not had a hand in building television. So for criminals to put their videos on YouTube is a long-distance variant of their putting their filthy hands on our stuff, more visceral than a philosophical objections could ever be.
What do you think? Do you in fact find the use of video sharing by criminals repellent? And if so, why. For that matter, if not, why?
(The video, which would violate the company's guidelines, looks to be gone from the service.)

DIY Ripstik underbody LED kit will make you look styley at night, still get heckled by skaters
The age of the underbody lighting craze on cars passed about as quickly as a bottle of N2O lasts on bracket night at the local strip, but that doesn't mean you can't still have some fun on your man-powered means of transportation. Sprinkler concept does triple duty rounds
The Sprinkler concept that you see here will target residential homes as it goes about its job to extinguish fires in case of an emergency, but that does not mean it will take its other two duties lightly - we're talking about a smoke detector and an emergency light source. After all, the nearest fire extinguisher might just be too far away, so this conceptual idea could very well be additional "insurance" in the event of an emergency. It will rely on powder to snuff fires out, but really, how much powder can it hold inside? Looks good, but in reality if realized, it doesn't sound too practical.

Anonymous DDoS Attacks Crash U.S. Copyright Office Website
Continuing its campaign against the defenders of copyright law, Anonymous orchestrated a denial-of-service attack against the website of the U.S. Copyright Office today, knocking the site offline for half an hour and rendering it slow to unusable for a couple of subsequent hours. (At the time of publishing, the home page is up, but none of the links on the site are operational.)
For the past month, Operation Payback, spearheaded by Anonymous, has targeted organizations like the RIAA, the MPAA, the UK Copyright Office, as well as KISS bassist Gene Simmons with DDoS attacks - either crashing their sites completely, grinding them to an unbearable halt, or in some cases, putting redirects in place so that visitors end up instead at the popular BitTorrent Pirate Bay website.

DDoS Attacks as Political Activism?
Anonymous sees itself as the defenders of the Internet, using the denial-of-service techniques as a sort of 21st century form of non-violent civil disobedience. Not a formal political group or organization, Anonymous is rather a loose coalition of individuals who see the crackdowns against file-sharing, done in the name of copyright protection, as contrary to the very freedom of the Internet.
TorrentFreak, reporting on today's attack against the U.S. Copyright Office, points to offline demonstrations being planned for November 5, Guy Fawkes Day. But it's not the sixteenth century Catholic rebel that tried to blow up Parliament that's being honored here. Rather it's a nod to the Alan Moore comic V for Vendetta, in which the revolutionary V (not just a munitions expert, but a hacker) takes on the totalitarian government.
The frequency with which Anonymous is staging its online protests seems to show no signs of abating, and so look for fireworks on Friday, the 5th of November.

Intel Chief River laptop platform to support USB 3.0, arrive in 2012?
Another Intel processor platform that sounds like a campground? Of course it is! This one is pretty far out -- like 2012 far out -- but if Digitimes is to be believed Intel's actually gearing up to reveal its Chief River laptop platform at CES in January. Said to be based on the 22nm Ivy Bridge processors and have native support for USB 3.0 (finally!), the platform would follow Huron River / Sandy Bridge, which is set to start shipping in laptops in early 2011. (Side note: Digitimes also mentions that we should start seeing Sandy Bridge laptops at this year's CES, which lines up with what we've heard from our own sources.) The word from motherboard manufacturers is that Chief River wouldn't actually go into mass production until September 2011 and start shipping in systems until January 2012, which makes quite a bit of sense given Intel's annual timing on these things. Either way, we should be finding out more in a couple months in Vegas -- heck, you never know, Intel may even tell us a bit about its 2013 laptop platform. Shall we give them a hand with potential names?Intel Chief River laptop platform to support USB 3.0, arrive in 2012? originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 03 Nov 2010 01:01:00 EDT. iOS Daylight Saving Time bug hits Europe (and the US too?)
Update: Some of our commenters are reporting that they're also seeing hour-early alarms in parts of North America. It's not yet clear if this is widespread or idiosyncratic, and if all 4.x devices are affected.
Update #2: Engadget points out that alarms set never to repeat, or set to repeat every day, are unaffected; just the selective repeat alarms (only weekends, only weekdays) are getting munged.
The iOS bug that caused recurring alarms to go off an hour early in New Zealand after its switch to Daylight Saving Time subsequently hit some territories in Australia following their switchover a week later. Apple promised a fix to the problem, and it's likely the fix will be bundled with the forthcoming iOS 4.2 update -- but that update hasn't come soon enough to stop the problem from striking Europe. With the switchover to Standard Time in Northern Hemisphere nations, European and Middle Eastern countries that have switched are now experiencing the same problem we saw in New Zealand and Australia, but in reverse: Europeans' recurring alarms are going off an hour later following the switch to Standard Time.
In New Zealand, the issue eventually resolved itself. A couple weeks after the switch to DST, recurring alarms started going off at the correct time again. The going theory was that Apple's time zone programming in iOS relied on obsolete protocols for DST; New Zealand used to switch to DST on the first Sunday in October, but switched to the last Sunday in September in 2007. It's possible the issue may eventually sort itself out in Europe as well, but not before a lot of Europeans who rely on their iPhones to wake them wind up late for work.

Mark/Space introduces GoGadget media synching software
Accurately syncing content and data between portable devices and computers has long been a hassle for users, especially those who tried to venture out of closed ecosystems. Mark/Space and its Missing Sync product came to the rescue of countless users, especially those with Macs who want to sync Palm and Windows Mobile devices. Mark/Space has just introduced a product called GoGadget designed to sync media content such as photos, videos and music to a variety of phones, digital photo frames and media players.
So far Mark/Space has released only a Mac version with a Windows variant promised soon. On the Mac, GoGadget promises to sync iTunes playlists and iPhoto albums directly to the likes of the Palm WebOs phones, Nokia N900 and Sandisk Sansa clip. GoGadget promises a simple user interface and offers a seven-day free trial. For now version 1.0 is priced at US$19.95 but that will be going to $29.95 eventually. We'll be trying it out shortly and providing a review with some of our non-Apple devices.

Rumor: iPhone 5 will use NFC for remote computing
Imagine if you could fit all of your Mac's personality -- settings, documents, and even applications -- into your iPhone, and then be able to have any Mac turn into your Mac. According to a source who talked with Cult of Mac's Leander Kahney, the iPhone 5 is expected to allow you to easily perform this type of magic through a Near Field Communication (NFC) capability built into the device.
NFC's initial use would be to turn the iPhone 5 into a passcode-protected electronic wallet or security passkey (like a SecureID fob) that would communicate via the short-range wireless technology to other compatible devices. Apple has recently hired a number of people who specialize in NFC and submitted patent applications for uses of the technology.
Kahney's source said that Apple is working on a way of letting Mac users simply wave their NFC iPhone near an NFC-equipped Mac, and that other machine suddenly acquires the personality of their home or office Mac. If NFC Macs become commonplace in hotel rooms, offices, and other public locations, you wouldn't need to carry even a lightweight MacBook Air with you. Just with a wave of your NFC iPhone 5, you'd have your computer anywhere that there was a Mac.
Once you walk away from the remote Mac, it reverts back to its initial personality, with all of your information disappearing from the Mac but securely stored on your iPhone. As with most rumors, there's a good chance that this technology might not make it to the next iteration of iPhone, but it would sure be an impressive and effective way to carry your Mac anywhere you go.
