Simoncelli Family Creates Simoncelli Foundation In Memory Of Marco

The death of Marco Simoncelli at Sepang earlier this year was utterly tragic, but some good will yet come from the popular Italian's demise. On Thursday, Simoncelli's parents, girlfriend and sister announced that the final documents had been signed to create the foundation set up in Marco Simoncelli's name. The Marco Simoncelli Fondazione has been set up as a non-profit organization, with the aim of helping those in dire need.

Exactly which projects will receive funds gathered through the foundation is yet to be decided, though Paolo Simoncelli, Marco's father, is keen to use the money as effectively as possible. According to GPOne.com, projects could include helping children with special care needs, such as extremely rare diseases, receive treatment and care. Paolo Simoncelli also said his initial impulse was to support large projects, but that such projects were fraught with danger. The foundation could instead support a few much smaller causes, as it is easier to exercise more control over such initiatives and ensure that the money is spent directly on helping those in need.

LG To Debut Second Intel-Powered Smartphone At CES 2012

lg-intel"If at first you don't succeed, try try again." It looks like LG and Intel have taken that old adage to heart, if a new report is to be believed. The Korea Times reports that LG will debut an Intel-powered smartphone at CES 2012, but the bigger question is whether or not the device will ever make it to market.

Droid 4 gets hands-on treatment, but it's simply a dummy unit

The folks over at TechnoBuffalo have just come across a rather interesting specimen -- it's a dummy unit of the forthcoming Droid 4 from Motorola. While its rumored release date has come and gone, non-functional models such as this are commonly offered to consumers in a retail setting to poke and prod to their heart's content. Nonetheless, the hands-on offers a few interesting details, such as a soft touch backside and insight into the redesigned keyboard, which is described as "the best one yet on a Droid handset." Whether we agree with that assertion will be determined come review time, but if you're interested to see the collection of up-close and personal shots with Moto's latest slider, be sure to check the source below.

Video: Electric Car From Japan Reaches Over 300KM Travel Range

Picture 2We spent two posts on SIM-LEI, an electric car developed by a a spin-off startup at Keio University in Tokyo in collaboration with a total of 34 domestic and foreign companies, in the past months. And it seems that the startup, SIM Drive Corporation, is on track to start mass-producing the vehicle in about 2 years. The company was set up in August 2009. The main selling point of the newest version is that it can drive over 300km at a constant speed of 100km/h. In spring, SIM Drive said the SIM-LEI (?Leading Efficiency In-Wheel motor?) can reach 333km under ?general urban traffic conditions in Japan?.

Moto GP Germany

Round 10 of the Moto GP world championship took place under the sweltering summer sun in Germany at the Sachsenring track on the 15th July. Many feared that tyres would be a deciding factor as the excessive heat might cause the tyres to break up over the 30 lap race.

On pole started the Australian chamipionship leading Ducati rider Casey Stoner out to prove that being on pole is not cursed as many fear and the only way he could do that was to win. Starting in a very good 2nd position on the grid was Dani Pedrosa on his Repsol Honda and alongside him closing out the front row was Marco Melandri on his Gresini Honda. Randy de Puniet started in 4th place on his Kawasaki, lining up next to him was the American John Hopkins on his Rizla Suzuki and aside him the ever-threatening Valentino Rossi on his Fiat Yamaha. Following these top 6 riders from qualifying was, in order, Loris Capirossi, Alex Barros, Sylvain Guintoli, Shinya Nakano closing out the top 10 and Chris Vermeulen started in 11th. Nicky Hayden started way down in 14th place, his team having already apologised to the Texas Tornado for not providing him with a decent bike for the weekend as he had struggled with various problems since Friday.

Dani Pedrosa got off to a good start and led into turn one, Casey Stoner in 2nd place and bringing up 3rd was Marco Melandri, coming out in 4th after the 1st corner was John Hopkins. On lap 2 Marco Melandri got passed Stoner who didn't seem to put up too much of a fight. Casey Stoner re-passed Melandri at the end of lap 2 and then got passed Dani Pedrosa as well, but only for a few metres as Pedrosa came straight back at him to re-take the lead of the German Moto GP. With 3 laps gone Carlos Checa went down but was able to eventually get his bike back up and into the pits. There his team changed his gear lever which had broken and he went back out onto the track with his race obviously over.

Valentino Rossi found himself stuck behind the green Kawasaki of Randy de Puniet and not being able to find a way past the Frenchman. Chris Vermeulen's race was effectively over as it was announced that he needed to serve a "driver-through" penalty for jumping the start of the race. Frenchman Sylvain Guintoli's race came to an early end as he crashed out with 26 laps to go.

Then came one of the most important parts of the race. Valentino Rossi pushed too hard into a corner trying to pass on the inside of Randy de Puniet and he and his bike went down sliding across the asphalt and into the gravel trap. Rossi struggled with his bike to try and get back into the race but simply couldn't; his handlebars were broken in the fall.

With a full 22 laps left in the race Dani Pedrosa was already starting to pull away from Casey Stoner and his Ducati with his lead being extended to slightly more than 0.8 seconds. On lap 10 Alex Barros crashed out on his Ducati, his race over immediately while he clutched his injured right hand tightly to his chest to avoid further injury to it. With 14 laps to go Nicky Hayden passes fellow American Colin Edwards while the gap from Pedrosa's Repsol Honda to Aussie Stoner's Ducati had grown to as much as over 2.5 seconds. With 12 laps left of the race not only was Stoner falling further and further back from away from the Spaniard Pedrosa, who was now lapping the German track 2 seconds faster than the Australian, but he was now comeing into the clutches of the chasing Marco Melandri and Loris Capirossi. Into corner one of the Sachsenring gp track Stoner became the center of a Capirossi and Melandri sandwich as they both tried to pass him, Melandri taking the outside line and Capirossi the inside. Melandri ran wide though and had to abort the pass while Capirossi went through and up into 2nd place.

While Dani Pedrosa rode unchallenged at front heading to his first win in over a year, the rest of the pack were fighting for the final positions and points. With 9 laps left in the race Marco Melandri managed to pass the defending Stoner who was clearly just trying to hang on with his tyres having fallen away drastically by now. He now was in damage limitation mode with both Nicky Hayden and John Hopkins closing in on the current championship leader. On lap 23 the flying Texas Tornado was able to get passed both John Hopkins and Casey Stoner, Hayden's compatriot Colin Edwards was also able to pass the other American John Hopkins. With 6 laps to go Nicky Hayden even managed to pass Marco Melandri for the final podium spot, having started way down in 14th place. With 4 laps left Casey Stoner passed Marco Melandri for 5th position.

So, the top 7 race positions:

1) Dani Pedrosa (Repsol Honda)

2) Loris Capirossi (Ducati)

3) Nikcy Hayden (Repsol Honda)

4) Colin Edwards

5) Casey Stoner

6) Marco Melandri

7) John Hopkins

Bed, Bath and Beyond selling off iCades for $49.99

Here's a weird deal that might work well if you poke around a bit: Bed, Bath and Beyond (which usually sells towels, sheets, and other household utilities) is apparently clearing out its inventory of iCade devices, per TouchArcade, which means that if you act fast and you're lucky, you might be able to pick one up from the retail store for $49.99. As of this writing, the arcade cabinet built for your iPad is available on BBB's website for the half-off price, and if you call around, you might find one at a store near you for just as cheap. These things usually sell on ThinkGeek for $100, so this is a pretty good deal if you can find it. As Mike's iMAME post noted last week, the cabinet works with MAME arcade emulators on jailbroken hardware and with quite a few App Store games.

Good luck out there. My guess is that BBB bought a bunch of these for the holiday season to sell as gifts, but didn't see the kinds of sales they expected to (which makes sense -- your standard housewares shopper probably wouldn't be after an iCade in the first place, necessarily). But that's cool; those of us who still haven't jumped on an iCade might be able to find them for cheap. It's been on sale before, but not quite this low. If you do get to pick one up, be sure to let us know what you think of it -- we definitely liked ours.

LG Prada 3.0 Makes Official Debut In Korea, Europe To Follow

LGpradaphone3.0Tech-savvy fashionistas finally have a reason to rejoice with the official release of LG's Prada 3.0 handset. Namely, it's the first time a in a long while that the company's fashion phones aren't completely outclassed by the competition. When I say outclassed, I'm referring strictly to performance. With it's 4.3-inch WVGA NOVA display, 1 GHz dual-core processor, and 8-megapixel camera, the Prada 3.0 is a solid little package, but one that's a bit lacking considering its premium price tag.

Issues for 2012 #4: What Should the Browser Become?

NCSA Mosaic logo.jpgIt was NCSA Mosaic that introduced the world to the Web. Since that time, the browser has become the principal software-based element in all the world's digital communications and transactions. It is the harbinger of a very powerful new class of dynamic language interpreters, making JavaScript the unlikely, though undisputed, vehicle for conveying interactive functionality. And for some manufacturers, it is the center of an apps ecosystem unto itself.

So the browser is in no danger of disappearing. But as the Web expands into a delivery mechanism for all forms of applications and services, is a stand-alone, exclusive window into the Web, complete with bookmarks and toolbars and add-ons, truly the most sensible usage model for a system that may yet embrace all of computing? This is a question Mozilla began asking last summer, and whose answer remains inconclusive.

Sponsor

Either the new form factor is here, or it's not

As Mozilla Foundation Chair Mitchell Baker announced last July, "I think of apps as a new 'form-factor' for the Web.

"The browser is no longer the only way people access the Internet. People also use more focused 'apps' to do discrete tasks, and often feel a strong sense of attachment to the apps and the app model," Baker wrote. "This is an exciting addition. Mozilla should embrace some aspects of the current app model in addition to the browser model."

But Baker's announcement points to an evolving, wiki-like document elsewhere on Mozilla's Web site, the latest version of which seems far less willing to abandon the browser-centric Web as Baker's original inspiration. "The next generation of innovation on the Web," it reads, "will be anchored by a browser that is an honest broker committed to the interests of the individual user and developer, providing amazing experiences that match those offered by proprietary platforms; and user control and developer reach and freedom that is superior to proprietary platforms. As Firefox has transformed the browser landscape before, it must do so again."

111228 01 Future Firefox screenshot.jpg

To that end, Stephen Horlander, who rearranged the contents of the browser for Mozilla Firefox version 4 in 2010, has been busy rearranging them yet again for a future version, as yet unnumbered. Under consideration is an adaptation of menus to include captioned tiles, like the home screen on an iPhone.

While this goes on, the organization has renewed its ongoing deal with Google for the next three years, which had been the principal source of the free Firefox browser's revenue. The deal retains Google's place as the search engine of choice in Firefox's search box, while Google continues to develop the competing Chrome browser that doesn't even have a search box - its text search capabilities are shared with the address bar.

Though the notion of Google Chrome as an OS for laptops and netbooks hasn't yet caught on with consumers, it has succeeded thus far at advancing the vision of the browser as an environment for real-world work. It's like a guiding star for the product line, a clear direction. So one should keep in mind how clever Google has been with its product strategy when assessing its motives behind extending its default search agreement with Mozilla: an agreement which presumes that for at least the next three years, Firefox will maintain a prominent window adornment called a search box. This while Microsoft, in establishing its bold, new direction for Windows 8, begins publishing an entirely window-less build of Internet Explorer 10, exploiting minimalist design ideas ironically pioneered by Mozilla's Aza Raskin (who will, incidentally, have officially left Mozilla at the first of the year).

If Windows 8 succeeds in the PC and tablet markets in 2013, the browser that most users will find themselves using will, once again, be the one that users start by default. (As some users would say during the heyday of IE5, "Isn't the Internet the one with the blue "e?") On the other hand, if Windows 8 fails, then the healthy and growing tablet market will most likely be led by iOS, followed by Android - neither of which have proven fertile fields for Firefox to flourish.

Are Web apps not really the Web?

The rise of HTML5 has advanced the myth that applications run outside the browser are somehow "not the Web." Thus users find themselves defending the sanctity of the browser-based environment without really knowing why.

To be the Web, RSS pioneer Dave Winer suggested in December, one has to provide links. "I don't care how ugly it looks and how pretty your app is, if I can't link in and out of your world," Winer wrote, "it's not even close to a replacement for the Web." (This from the fellow who, ten years earlier, advocated an all-out defense of Java.)

Winer's argument holds some water in that no network is truly viable without connections. The Web was originally conceived as a network of contextual connections between related topics; it gave rise to a delivery system, HTTP, which became ubiquitous thanks to the popularity of the browser. That ubiquity opened up a path for a new class of distributed applications that was not beholden to any one company's or organization's proprietary strategy.

If that class of apps is not really the Web, though, as Winer suggests, then the browser truly does have a place in our future - just a limited one. Articles with hyperlinks are nice, but their utility is limited. The role that Mitchell Baker foresees of an "honest broker" of functionality sounds less like a newsreader and more like an operating system.

For the browser to truly evolve - to fulfill all of Mozilla's many goals and obligations simultaneously - it could conceivably become a kind of language platform. Think of an "inner iOS" or "inner Android" inside the operating system (I believe someone once coined the term "virtual machine"), within which the role of reading articles in a hyperlinked web falls to just one of many "apps." And here, Google search may be featured prominently in accordance with the agreement.

To that end, however, Google may already be further along with its advent of Dart, a kind of "JavaScript++" that incorporates the full scope and object support features of Java while maintaining compatibility.

However, if we're really considering HTTP as a kind of pipeline that enables end-to-end functionality, where the Web as we've come to know it is but one of many channels, then one could argue Microsoft is quite far along, at least with respect to its roadmap for Windows 8. The WinRT runtime would implant not a virtual machine subordinate to the OS, but a real machine that is a principal OS function, alongside its existing .NET Framework. Neither Google's nor Microsoft's development strategy is open to contribution from the community, like JavaScript. But the community has yet to reveal, or perhaps even coordinate, a counter-strategy - something which accelerates the evolution of the browser beyond yet another round of add-ons.

Can a browser be a reader?

HTML5 - the lingua franca du jour of the future Web - is already planning for a browser-less library, with its CSS Generated Content for Paged Media. This system envisions a Web without browsers alongside the Web with browsers, with the former being full of fine literature, long-form articles, and educational matter - a Web that speaks directly to the dreams of Dave Winer, full of links, references, and relationships.

But unlike a blog, and unlike the Web as it's currently realized in browsers, W3C envisions more of a reader. "There is nothing in Web specifications that prevent browsers from adding a page-based mode today," the draft reads. "However, most Web content is authored and styled with a continuous presentation in mind. This could change if it becomes possible to describe paged presentations in style sheets."

For anyone who presumes that conventional browsers are the Web, the W3C effectively proves with the very drafting of this module for HTML5 that they are not. It foresees a Web beyond the browser, in a new and perhaps richer context, full of new research and discovery tools that simply don't fit the old mold. While there are browser-based apps today for Amazon's Kindle and other literary contexts, the books in that environment are worlds unto themselves, without any links in or out with which Winer may escape.

For Mozilla or anyone else to get ahead of the game at this point, perhaps it may be agreeable to concede that the Web, such as it has been, is only a segment of a broader, more functional, more usable realm of information.

Twitter Ignored Request To Keep Subpoena Under Wraps [UPDATED]

Twitter appears to have forwarded a subpoena requesting user information to at least one of the owners of the accounts in question, despite a request from the Suffolk Massachusetts District Attorney's office that the request not be disclosed "to protect the confidentiality and integrity of the ongoing criminal action" regarding the hackitivist group Anonymous and events surrounding the Occupy Boston protest.

"Haha. Boston PD submitted to Twitter for my information. Lololol? For what? Posting info pulled from public domains? #comeatmebro," said the owner of the Twitter handle @p0isAn0N last week, in a post that included the subpoena. The subpoena also sought user information, including IP addresses for @OccupBoston, Guido Fawkes (there are more than 30 accounts using the name Guido Fawkes on Twitter) and subscriber information for the hash tage #BostonPD.

Sponsor

Requests for comment have been made to both Twitter and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. We'll update when they get back to us. Update: "We can't comment on any specific order or request," Matt Graves, a spokesperson for Twitter said in an email. "However, to help users protect their rights, it is our policy to notify our users about law enforcement and governmental requests for their information, unless we are prevented by law from doing so."

Twitter's guidelines for law enforcement say the company notifies users when information is requested unless forbidden from doing so by statute or court order. It's not clear if Twitter turned over the subpoena to @p0isAn0N and, if so, why it chose to ignore the request made on the second page of the subpoena.

Twitter's guidelines also say that the company will only turn over personal information if presented with a subpoena or a court order. Unlike Facebook, which prohibits users from registering anonymously, Twitter users can use false identities when signing up for an account.

"Never declare war on the young," said Harvey Silverglate, a noted civil libertarian, told the Boston Herald in reference to the less-than-tech-savvy wording of the subpoena. "They'll outlast you. They'll outthink you. They'll outdo you... That may be the lesson the DA's office is about to learn."

In October, at the height of the Occupy Boston protest, hackers claiming to be members of Anonymous broke into the Boston Police Patrolmens' Association and copied members' names, union email addresses and passwords. The information was later posted online.
