Half Of IT People Polled Plan To Stick With XP After It Expires
I'm not sure which is the greater credit to Microsoft: that Windows 7 is the fastest-selling OS of all time, or that the rock-solid XP is still going strong after ten years. Despite numerous warnings and, of course, a great OS update to, a lot of system admins are choosing to stick with the old workhorse for as long as they can, even after it's no longer supported. Hey, if it ain't broke, right?endowments

Confirmed: T-Mobile 4G is coming soon to a city near you
First, T-Mobile advertised “4G speeds“. Then they unveiled the myTouch 4G. Now T-Mobile is ready to start promoting their new 21 Mbps, HSPA+ network as 4G, according to a report from our friends at TmoNews.
A tipster reported that retail storesbeganreceiving promotionalmaterialsincluding brochures and signage which advertise T-Mobile as having “America’s largest 4G network”. The new network message is expected to begin in early November.
T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network offers max download speeds of 21 Mbps, which are double Sprint?s 4G WiMAX (10 Mbps). Those download speeds willdouble to 42 Mbps next year as the carrier continues to upgrade their network.
Right now T-Mobile sells the HTC G2 which offers speeds up to 14.4 Mbps and plan to launch the myTouch 4G on November 3rd.
The HSPA+ technology is also backwards compatible with 16 of T-Mobile?s current 3G devices, which includes their entire Android lineup....RSS feed brought to you by the Android and Me Store

This is what Sprint ID could look like on your Epic 4G [Video]
Earlier this month at CTIA, Sprint unveiled three new entry-level Android phones that all featured Sprint ID. I spoke with a lot of people from Sprint (including the UI designer behind the project) trying to figure out exactly how to define the experience and the best I could come up with is it’s Sprint’s new custom UI for Android that they were going to push on their new mid-range phones.
In all fairness, here is how Sprint defines Sprint ID: “Sprint ID is a catalog of experiences that will grow and expand giving Sprint customers a new kind of on-device technology to explore. Users can choose from a single experience or many (up to five IDs at once). Only Sprint ID gives the user ringers, wallpapers, apps and widgets downloaded all at once, in one click based on the Sprint ID pack they choose ? it personalizes their home...RSS feed brought to you by the Android and Me Store

Sprint CEO Says WiMAX is their 4G Strategy, Period
Dan Hesse, CEO of Sprint, said recently of the company, “Our 4G strategy is WiMAX, full stop.” Of course I had no idea what “full stop” meant when I read it, so I had to look it up, and of course it’s just another way of saying “period,” as in the mark at the end [...]endowment mortgage

AppleCare has paid for itself
My iMac is about three years old. I know this because my AppleCare is expiring on November 7th, and it extends the included one-year warranty by two years to give a total of three years of coverage. In short, I'm glad I've had it and wouldn't consider owning a Mac without it.
In the last three years, I have had a hard drive replaced (December 2008), a logic board replaced (March 2010), and am currently scheduled to have a second hard drive replacement (late October 2010).
I'm not particularly hard on my computers. They've all been plugged into UPS units (I've had good success with APC) and treated well and fairly. Perhaps I'm just unlucky. Whatever the reason, choosing AppleCare is a simple matter of numbers: given the number of Macs that Apple sells, if even a fraction of 1% have issues over the course of three years, that's going to be a significant number.
Others will tell you they've owned several Macs, without AppleCare. This is the same lot who never purchase "extended warranties," which they consider "scams." To them I say that AppleCare is an exception, especially since Macs are increasingly difficult or impossible to get into. Still others will say that Apple ought to include 3 years' worth of protection with every Mac they sell. Perhaps, but the world as it exists is often disappointing compared to the world as we wish it existed.
Read on for some suggestions for getting the most out of AppleCare.

RealVNC adds "iPod Out" so cars can display iOS device screen data
RealVNC, the company behind the original VNC remote computing protocol, has added iOS to the list of devices that are supported by its VNC Mobile Solution for Automotive. In general, VNC (virtual network computing) allows users to see the display output from another computer over a network. It's commonly used to manage servers that are running without an attached monitor.
While a number of automakers have integrated iPod/iPhone control functionality, many of them have implemented rather clunky user interfaces. VNC Mobile will allow the actual iOS interface, including Cover Flow or even Google Maps, to be displayed directly on the larger in-dash touchscreen in the car. This way, a user could just use the larger display to manage what they are listening to without fumbling with the iPod or iPhone. The new version uses the "iPod Out" feature that Apple has built into the latest versions of iOS to provide this capability. Check out the video in the second half of the post.
Update: The video actually shows the capability of the VNC software to display the output of a smartphone using a Nokia N900. RealVNC is utilizing the newly implemented capabilities in iOs 4.1 to do the same thing.

WiFi-only Galaxy Tab stops by the FCC
We may not know exactly when Samsung plans on releasing the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab, but new FCC documentation shows that the device does in fact exist. As you might expect, this version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab was only tested for WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity while it was in the FCC labs. When it comes to gadgets, we very rarely opt for devices with fewer features, but in this case it?s pretty safe to say that less is more.
By removing the 3G chip from the Galaxy Tab, Samsung should be able to shave off at least $100 from the price tag. A $500 7 inch tablet may still be way out of reach for most consumers, but it?s certainly a lot more intriguing than having to pay $399 plus two years of data connection charges to your favorite service provider.

October 28th has finally arrived and Verizon's new data plans have been unveiled to the public, giving you a few money saving options if you think that you've been on a data plan that's too expensive for you. Unlimited 3G smartphone data is still available for those YouTube junkies out there and will still set you back $29.99. The unlimited data plan is no longer required when purchasing a new Droid as you're given the option of a $14.99 plan for 150MB of data. You can check out the full table of Verizon's data plans on the official site. Let us know what you think of the new data plans in the comments section.

Vietnam Continues Crackdown, Burmese Blogger Smuggles Poems: This Week in Online Tyranny
Vietnamese bloggers continue to suffer harassment. Vietnam has gone gangbusters on busting bloggers and others in the last month or so. Two upcoming events may explain that. The Communist Party Congress, first in five years, is coming up in January. Second, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Rodham Clinton is due in Ho Chi Minh City again in this week.
The latest blogger to be arrested is Le Nguyen Huong Tra. Co Gai Do Long, as she is known in the Vietnamese blogging world, was arrested October 23 for "defaming" a senior party official. Having already accused public security minister Nguyen Khanh Toan of nepotism for giving his allegedly drug-taking son a job. Now, she added, that same minister has been doling out favors to his son's mistress.

Imprisoned Burmese blogger publishes poems. Nay Phone Latt, a young blogger swept up in the post-Saffron Revolution arrests in his country, has found a way to smuggle out his poetry. Reporters Without Borders has reported receiving a number of his poems, two of which you can read below, in both Burmese and English.
The poems are beautiful, the idiosyncratic English of his own translations adding to the tactility of the images and reality of the emotions.
Latt was arrested in January of 2008 and sentenced to 20 years in the aptly named Insein prison for his blog-based reporting of the anti-government, monk-led demonstrations in Burma the previous year. One of his posts was a poem, an acrostic. The first letter of each line read down spelled out, "Than Shwe is foolish with power." Senior General Than Shwe is the leader of the junta that runs Burma as a dictatorship.
The PEN group gave Latt their 2010 PEN/Barbara Goldsmith Freedom to Write Award later that year.

WITN: ?On Paper, Singapore Shouldn?t Have Done as Well as it Has?
Given Paul?s ability to get into fights even in sleepy towns like Camden, Maine, it's lucky Sarah does the lion?s share of the travelling.
This week, she?s in Singapore - on a week-long trip to take the island?s entrepreneurial pulse and next week she?ll be returning to Jakarta to do similar there (hopefully, you?ve already sent in your questions for her special South-East Asia editions of Ask A VC).
You can read more about Sarah?s trip in a series of posts coming over the next few days, but first, with Paul safely back in the studio, we caught up via Skype to discuss some of the interesting startups she?s found so far - and also how Singapore?s colonial past and uber-efficient present has affected its entrepreneurial outlook.

Cosmic Discoveries is a great free demo for your iPhone
Every so often I see a free app that is just dying to be used as an iPhone demonstration. The candidate for today is the American Museum of Natural History app called Cosmic Discoveries.
When you open the app, you see an image of Saturn. It's a bit crinkly, so you dive in for a closer look, dragging your fingers apart to trigger a zoom. What you'll find is that the image is composed of many hundreds of pictures that can be expanded to near full screen proportions. The zoom goes almost literally to infinity. Some of the pictures are historical photos of observatories or scientists, while many others are striking images of the planets and deep space objects taken by some of our best observatories, or the Hubble or Spitzer Space Telescopes.
You can explore the images and the attached information for hours. Alas, all things are not perfect. The app doesn't support the iPhone 4 Retina display. Another big foul up is that you're given the opportunity to share any image with someone via email, but when the image arrives, text is plastered across the middle of the image suggesting that the recipient download the app, too. It's hard to believe that the people who want you to enjoy the grandeur of the universe would deface their own images for some cheap promotion, which could have been handled in the text of the email and not in front of the image.
I hope that rather glaring fault gets fixed, but even so, this is a really cool program that you can explore at no cost. You're bound to learn a few things, and the gigantic zoom is just the thing to show off your iPhone. There's no iPad-specific version, and the app requires iOS 2.2.1 or later.

These Man-Sized Angry Birds Just Might Be The Geekiest Halloween Costumes Of 2010
When can you really declare your game a smash hit? When it cracks through 10 million downloads? Eh. When you've got a full line of plush toys coming based on its characters? Sure, I guess that's alright. But here's the real challenge: dig your game deep enough into the hearts and minds of your fans that you've got people dressing up like the characters for Halloween.
With that in mind: Congratulations, Angry Birds. You've (sling)shot your way into a VIP area generally reserved for the likes of Master Chief, Mario, Samus, and other gaming legends. That's right: you've got cosplayers.

Workers allegedly poisoned while making iPhones
Several Chinese laborers are reporting serious illness after being exposed to a toxic chemical while assembling iPhones. According to reports, the workers inhaled vapors of a chemical called n-hexane while working in a poorly-ventilated room.
An ABC News foreign correspondent gained access to the Number Five People's Hospital in Suzhou, where the workers are being treated, to speak with them. They said that n-hexane was being used to glue and polish Apple logos on Apple iPhones that "...they assumed were not fakes." The workers, some of whom have been hospitalized for half a year, state that they became dizzy and eventually were unable to walk. Most report continued pain in their legs.
in a similar story, manufacturer Wintek recently halted the use of n-hexane after workers became ill. Wintek makes touch screens for many Apple products. Affected Wintek employees also report chronic leg pain following otherwise successful n-hexane treatment.
Wikipedia describes n-hexane as a hydrocarbon that is often "...used in the formulation of glues for shoes, leather products, and roofing. They are also used to extract cooking oils from seeds, for cleansing and degreasing all sorts of items, and in textile manufacturing."
It's interesting to note that the Chinese manufacturer is not mentioned in the story. It's well known that Foxconn workers assemble Apple iPhones, and that they have endured their own sets of hardships.
To the best of our knowledge, it's unknown if this is about a Foxconn factory, a third-party factory sub-contracted by Foxconn to help meet the incredible demand, a counterfeit plant, etc. We'll follow this story and keep you updated.Workers allegedly poisoned while making iPhones originally appeared on TUAW on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST. Sprint fails to impress Wall Street with Q3 2010 earnings, still notches 644k net adds
Sprint certainly isn't out of the woods yet, but at least it's picking up customers from somewhere. The company's Q3 2010 earnings were ushered out today, and while its stock fell around ten percent on the news, a few silver linings were present. The carrier saw postpaid subscriber losses of 107,000, but that's an 87 percent improvement compared to Q3 2009. The CDMA network added approximately 276,000 postpaid customers during the quarter, 471,000 (net) prepaid subscribers and 644,000 total wireless subscribers from a net perspective. It also landed its second best postpaid churn result ever, but the bottom line still looks battered -- the operator announced a net loss of nearly a billion dollars ($911 million, if you're scouting specifics). Of course, phasing out iDEN should probably help things in the long run, but even its 4G advantage could quickly fade if (or more likely, when) Verizon gets its LTE act together next year.Sprint fails to impress Wall Street with Q3 2010 earnings, still notches 644k net adds originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Oct 2010 19:43:00 EDT. Apple delays white iPhone 4 into spring 2011
Let's just be honest, Apple: white stuff is impossible to manufacture. In fact, scientists have yet to prove that white even exists, so we're not sure why you're bothering to try to make a phone out of it! That's right: after a missed availability date in July and another delay after that, Cupertino has once again pushed back the manufacture of the palest iPhone 4 -- this time clear into spring of 2011. It won't say why, but in all likelihood, they're still dealing with the same manufacturing woes they've had from the start. By the time mid-2011 rolls around, it seems probable that the release will be butting up against news of the iPhone 4's successor -- or at the very least, a CDMA version of the phone -- so it'll be fascinating to see how this timeline unfolds. In the meantime, yeah... might want to give up the wait and go for black.Apple delays white iPhone 4 into spring 2011 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 26 Oct 2010 19:32:00 EDT. Meet NOOKcolor, coming to Barnes & Noble on Nov. 19
It’s an e-reader. It’s a tablet. Meet the NOOKcolor by Barnes & Noble.
Barnes & Noble just unveiled the successor to the original NOOK, which is a 7 inch Android-powered tablet that claims to be “Theultimatereadingexperience”. The NOOKcolor is already available for pre-order on bn.com at $249 and is expected to ship around November 19th.
Considering that the NOOKcolor is targeted at moms, kids, and families I expect it will be one of the hottest gifts this Christmas season. The original NOOK pre-order exceeded all expectation and orders were heavily delayed, so if you are considering getting one then order early. Hopefully B&N will be ready this year to keep up with demand.
Details on the actual tech specs are limited at this point, but we know NOOKcolor is based off Android 2.1. We know the “VividView” display is made by LG and features 16 million colors at...RSS feed brought to you by the Android and Me Store

Microsoft release Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac [Video]
Microsoft has released its beta of the Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac app, that will allow OS X users to sync their photos, videos, music and podcasts between their new smartphone and their desktop. Available through Microsoft’s download site, the app links in with iPhoto – for photos and videos – and iTunes – for audio – allowing either complete or selective transfer of content to the handset.
Video demo after the cut
There’s a resident monitor that automatically loads the sync tool when a Windows Phone 7 device is plugged in, though no Zune functionality; Microsoft assumes that all OS X users will already be managing their media in iTunes. There’s a brief demo in the video below, and more details in our hands-on report.

Exclusive: First Look at Siine, a Revolution in Text-Based Communication
As the world shifts to using more tablets, touchscreens and mobile devices as the point of access to the Web, there's an increasing need to rethink the keyboard. On smaller form factors, the traditional method of tap typing may no longer be the best way to enter text on a screen. Enter Siine, a semantically-based, intelligent interface that evolves the keyboard.
But this is no mere keyboard replacement "app," it's much more. It's a communication platform. A universal translator. A system that learns how you speak and then speaks for you. Siine is the future of text-based communication - or, at least that's what the company says.
Sponsor
While that statement may or may not end up being true, it's wonderful to see a startup dreaming this big.
Not Just a Keyboard Replacement App
Several companies have already begun re-thinking the keyboard, including Swype, a keyboard replacement app which lets you drag your finger across the screen from letter to letter, and SwiftKey, which smartly suggests the word you may enter next (e.g. You type "t" and it suggests "the.") Similar to Siine, SwiftKey also makes use of natural language processing and machine learning to suggest the words you may type - that is the sorts of things you typically say in a conversation.
When Siine first enters the market, it may be confused as a direct competitor to apps like these, because it will initially arrive as an Android Market application. But Android is just the beginning - Siine aims to be an app you use on all your screens, coming next to the iPhone, the iPad, tablet PCs and the Web shortly after its Android launch. And according to the company, it will more than just a keyboard replacement application.
So what is Siine, exactly? Well, it's a little curious. Operating in stealth mode until recently, the company is still short on details, leaving much to be revealed during its launch at November's Under the Radar conference, an event showcasing new startups.
What We Do Know: Semantics, Understanding, Translation
Here's what we do know: Siine is a communication tool that will eventually exist for any platform where you enter text into a little white box. Whether you're SMS'ing on your Android, typing on an iPad, tweeting from a basic messaging phone or surfing the Web.
Siine doesn't just suggest words, it suggests the words you would say. For example, if you always sign off your text messages with "Cya!!!!!!!!!!!", Siine knows. If you say "like" all the time, Siine knows. If you use acronyms, Siine knows. It even knows what those acronyms mean. It even knows what acronyms mean in different languages. And it doesn't need to have giant dictionary-based databases on the backend to do all this because it uses semantics - a technology that enables the understanding of meanings and context of the words and phrases you use.
In short, Siine combines intelligence, semantics and the ability to understand you.
Update: In an earlier version of this article, we said Siine was like an augmented version of SwiftKey. That may or may not be the case. SwiftKey is also a semantically-based application with an ability to understand you. However, although SwiftKey does support several languages, it does not function as a universal translator as Siine intends to. In our mind, that's a plus. But it was not our intention to malign SwiftKey, an arguably great app in its own right. We should also note that SwiftKey has intentions beyond the Android Market as well.
Business Model Still Flexible
For now, the company's business model is flexible - the company is in talks with several big-name handset manufacturers and mobile carriers, as well as VCs.
Siine's CEO Ed Maklouf's educational background plays well into the creation of a startup like this. While at Stanford, he studied Communications and Linguistics, so he has a better understanding of how people communicate with each other than the average entrepreneur. He and his small team have now put that knowledge into action in Siine and we're excited to take a look at what they've come up with.
Are you excited too? We thought so. In a couple of weeks, Siine will launch into private beta and we'll offer invites to our readers - stay tuned.
Above is the first and only image of Siine that the company is providing at the moment. It's notable for the fact that it doesn't look remarkably different than a standard keyboard. How does Siine turn that keyboard into a "revolutionary" new interface, exactly? We'll keep you posted.

More evidence that PayPal payments are coming to the Android Market
It's been kind of an poorly kept secret that the Android Market is about to accept PayPal for purchasing apps -- and the official announcement is likely this week at PayPal's dev conference in San Francisco. But with a little Firebug trickery, the Android Market Developer's Console can out the news today, and that's what you see above. Google will automatically move the payments to your Google Checkout account, which is darn helpful. Thanks, Al!Posted originally at Android CentralSponsored by Android Cases and Accessories

Users Losing Photos After iPhoto '11 Upgrade?
Apple's iLife '11 might have arrived with much fanfare, but there is some bad news going around related to iPhoto '11. Reports are in that some users are losing some or all of their photo libraries when upgrading. It probably isn't too widespread an issue just yet, or everybody would be complaining. That being said, the folks who have been affected are complaining about it, especially in the forums. It's also worth noting that iPhoto '11 drops support for older Apple TVs along with photo calendars that are available in the current version of iPhoto. Regardless of whether you think your photos will be affected or not, it's always a good practice to backup your data before performing and upgrade, and if you decide to do so, you can always pick it up for $49 from Amazon. A possible solution for folks who have been affected by this bug includes repairing the disk permissions in full, which you might want to try if you've already been affected.

Panasonic GH2 will hit Europe this November 14th
Our friends living across the pond will be most pleased to find out that the Panasonic GH2 Micro Four Thirds shooter is ready to rock and roll in Europe sometime later this year - November 14th, to be exact. That continent won't be the first to get hold of the GH2 though, since those living in the far East (specifically, Japan) will be able to check out the GH2 from October 29th, while those of us living Stateside will be last among the three, receiving it only at the end of November. If this is anything like its predecessor, you can be sure that quality will be right on top of the list for most of its features and functions.

Thousands of Reddit Users Donate Their Data for Research
Last month, Cond Nast social news site Reddit asked users if they would donate their data for research purposes. This week the site made available a data dump from more than 40,000 people who opted-in to sharing what they do on the site. It's a remarkable move than every social network could learn from.
Reddit's goal for this data is to see it used to create a recommendation engine - in particular a system that would highlight some of the niche communities on Reddit that are a great place to find good topical content, but that too few people on the site have discovered. Now that the data is out in the wild, however, any number of analyses can be performed on it - and no one knows what kinds of observations about the relationship between people, web content, voting and news will be discovered. One little account preference opens up a world of opportunities: "allow my data to be used for research purposes."
Sponsor
So far the number of users who have opted-in to donating their data remains relatively small (the site saw 400 million pageviews in July, for example) but it's already enough to prove valuable.
"It's great to have these kinds of data dumps available for research," says Joel Spolsky, co-founder of the popular StackOverflow network, which makes its user data available in a bulk dump every month, under a Creative Commons license. "We've had several academics analyzing our data dump and learning interesting, measurable, scientifically relevant things about online communities. You never know what's going to come out of it."
"You never know what's going to come out of it." - Joel Spolsky on analysis of aggregate user dataData savvy developers are sure to be interested in this kind of resource. "That looks awesome," Tim Hastings of TagWalk, a service that does analysis of Twitter tag data, said to us about the Reddit data dump. "I especially like the goal of recomputing every two hours. Big data sets like this are great fun. You start out not knowing what you want to know, but you know there must be some wisdom buried deep."
Chris Dixon, co-founder of recommendation service Hunch, said the Reddit data and recommendation effort are a "great project." "I think I'll have our devs hack something together using the Hunch API," he said. "We have a blog recommender widget [of our own] coming out soon." Dixon's company is one of the most prominent startups aiming to build a "taste graph" and Hunch already offers recommendations that impress many people, on a wide variety of topics.
Real-world recommendations, profile analysis for increased self-awareness and scientific insights into the nature of online life: those are the kinds of things people are building now with publicly available social network user data.
Nowhere in the world is there more opportunity to develop such insights based on user data than on Facebook. Facebook used to hand over data dumps of its users activities to big companies doing research without communicating that to the users. Now, a much larger company, Facebook is maddeningly unwilling to offer bulk data export for research and analysis. Perhaps in part because people are so upset whenever the release of data is perceived as a violation of online privacy.
That's an easy problem to solve, though, if Reddit is any indication. Just ask users if they want to check one box: "allow my data to be used for research purposes."
Please, Facebook?

Vertu Constellation Quest hits the FCC. Like an E72, but really expensive
If you like your phones to be as prestigious as your cars, then you probably know of (or own a) Vertu -- Nokia's "luxury" phone brand.
If you don't, you probably enjoy seeing these things (and their accompanying price tag) as much as I, so allow me to introduce you to the Vertu Constellation Quest.
The phone was announced last week by Vertu, but, in true "if you need to ask" style, they were lax on details like specs and price.
But, today, the phone passed through the FCC, and we now have access to its manual, and all the specs contained within.

Nook users can already lend ebooks they've purchased to others, and it looks like Kindle users will soon be able to do the same. Amazon has just announced that it will be offering a similar feature "later this year" that will let folks lend books they've purchased to other Kindle users for a 14-day period, during which the person that actually purchased the book won't be able to read it themselves. That feature won't be available for all ebooks, however, as it will be up to individual publishers and rights holders to enable it for a particular book. What's more, Amazon has also announced that Kindle newspapers and magazines will soon be readable on the various free Kindle apps available for other devices -- look for that feature to launch in the "coming weeks."Amazon announces 14-day lending feature for Kindle books, newspapers and magazines for Kindle apps originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 22 Oct 2010 16:37:00 EDT. AT&T begins to switch to LTE compatible SIM cards
Check out the internal AT&T memo that details the carrier’s intention to being the transition to LTE-capable SIM cards. AT&T has already begun to prepare employees for a new SIM card which will see action in LTE handsets and devices. AT&T has informed their employees to verify that the SIM card is correct, and this can be done by checking the SKU on the card despite the fact that the new LTE cards are visibly different. While it does seem as though there will be up to “eight different SIMs” during the transition, that would mean verifying the SKU is of utmost importance so that nobody gets confused in the process.

Atheros wireless unveils hybrid home networking solutions
When it comes to home networking we typically have two choices – WiFi or Powerline. Most of us don?t have Ethernet cabling in the walls and adding that cabling after the fact is impossible in some instances. Atheros has unveiled a new line of hybrid home networking solutions that combine both WiFi and Powerline networking into one package.
The new solutions are a combination of WiFi and powerline gear that allow the user to get wireless access in the home and get web access to parts of the home where WiFi is spotty and connections are slow or just don?t work. The hybrid systems have software that works behind the scenes to manage the network over the different connectivity methods the system offers.
The hybrid solutions also support networking and smart power solutions. The hub in the hybrid systems is capable of speeds up to 500Mbps to support streaming video and other bandwidth heavy uses. The Powerline/Ethernet adapters are offered in single of four port designs for connecting devices and can operate at up to 200Mbps over the Powerlines in the home. The systems also have a WiFi/Powerline range extender reference design to extend their network to reach WiFi devices in parts of the home where the normal signal just can?t reach. All of the products in the series will land in Q4 2010.

NVIDIA GF104 Fermi update tipped to replace GTX 470
NVIDIA are tipped to be readying an updated version of their GF104 Fermi GPU, on the heels of price cuts to the GeForce GTX 470 range. The new GF104 will apparently have eight Streaming Multiprocessors (SM), according to Fudzilla, thus increasing the overall number of stream processors in the chip to 384 (an increase of 48).
Meanwhile it will also increase SFUs to 32, while texture units are expected to rise from 56 to 64. Interestingly, the current GF104 has seven SMs, and there’s speculation that the new chip could in fact be exactly the same component only with a further SM unlocked now that NVIDIA need the extra boost of power.

11.6? MacBook Air Torn Down by iFixit
With another Apple announcement done and over with, and new hardware showcased, it’s about time that iFixit gets their hands on the new toy, and starts tearing it down. And sure enough, they’ve wasted no time in getting the smaller version of the brand new line-up of MacBook Airs to their work benches, and tearing them down.
We’ve already kind of seen what the inside of the 11.6-inch MacBook Air looks like, this break down goes a bit more in-depth, as usual. The disassemblers have already begun work on the MacBook Air, but as of the time of this writing they’ve still got a ways to go before they find all of the information they’re looking for. However, as anyone who has followed iFixit in the past, we’ve already got some interesting details to share.
Firstly, it looks like Apple doesn’t want the general consumer to go fiddling inside the case. The whole thing is screwed shut with 5-point Security Torx screws. The MacBook Air’s 64GB of flash storage is created from four 16GB Toshiba chips, with a controller chip fastened onto a removable board. As for the Bluetooth/Wifi chip, it’s the same one you’ll find in the current generation MacBook Pro. It’s a short list for now, but stay tuned, as iFixit continues their tear down.

70TB DIY computer is a wonder
Just empty your mind at the moment - how much space is 70TB? Before you go wild with your imagination (or just are plain terrible at math), let us list down the nitty gritty. On average, 70TB of storage space is able to hold around 24 million songs, or 70,000 movies at DVD quality. This is what you get with this DIY home computer, where it holds 60 hard drives for a grand total of 70TB of storage space, all crammed into a wood cabinet. Good thing there are 40 fans inside that prevents it from catching fire. Yowza!

Solar-panel Wall Installation Also Collects Rainwater To Stay Green
If you want a way to make your building gather solar-power and also maintain an eco-friendly look, the concept solar-paneled wall pictured above might be what you've been looking for. The design has rectangular containers of various sizes installed on the wall, collecting run-off rainwater which will filter down through moss and grass to make it to the next container. The containers include solar panels to harness solar energy while doing its part to make your building look like something Mother Nature would smile upon.

Our Take: Apple?s ?Back To The Mac?Event
It's been an eventful day all around. All but the most outlandish rumors we'd heard were confirmed, including the marriage of OS X and iOS, FaceTime coming to the Mac, a revamped iLife, and a pair of new MacBook Airs with iPad-like flash storage. We've gotten our hands on both the new Air and Facetime, our impressions of which you can read separately, but here are our blurb-sized weigh-ins on the new today's event and the new Apple products.endowment policy

SafeSleep lets you use safe sleep on demand on your Mac
If you've ever wanted more control over Apple's "safe sleep" mode, the free SafeSleep.app from Side Tree Software is for you.
If you've never heard of it before, you might be wondering what "safe sleep" is (but if you have heard of it, you can skip the next couple paragraphs). When the battery on one of Apple's notebook computers (including the MacBook, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and some late-model PowerBooks) is very low, OS X will put the machine into what Apple calls "safe sleep" mode. This is similar to standard sleep, except the contents of the RAM are completely written to the hard drive and all power shuts down. You can even remove the battery while the machine is in safe sleep. To wake the computer from safe sleep, press the power button on the computer. A progress bar will display (startup will be noticeably slower than a normal wake from sleep), then your computer will be restored to how it was before safe sleep was invoked.
This feature is called "hibernation" in the Windows world, and it's one of the very few features I missed when I switched from Windows to Mac. (The other big one was how Windows deals with moving files, which can be replicated on the Mac side using moveAddict.) One of the nice things that Windows computers have is the ability to choose to hibernate when you are shutting down the machine. For years I never turned my Windows laptop off; I only hibernated. Unfortunately, Apple has not made that feature available to Mac users.
That's where SafeSleep.app comes in. When you launch the app, it displays several options. The one I'm most excited about is "Safe Sleep Now," which lets me choose safe sleep without having to change the way the Mac usually works. I can still just close the lid for normal sleep (or choose it from the window above), but if I want to make sure to trigger safe sleep, it's now much easier to do.
"Always use Safe Sleep" will tell the computer to never use the normal, faster sleep mode. If you choose that and want to change it back later, select "Only Safe Sleep in Emergencies." You can also totally disable safe sleep; this isn't recommended for obvious reasons, but if you're willing to take the risk, disabling it can make the process of putting your Mac into "normal sleep" faster.
Although safe sleep was designed for portable Macs, you can also use it on desktop Macs. At night I use safe sleep on my iMac because otherwise it seems to wake from "normal sleep" on its own. A word of caution, however: be sure to unmount any external drives which are connected to your Mac before entering safe sleep. Even if they remain physically attached to the Mac, OS X thinks the disk was ejected without being unmounted, which is something you want to avoid. Physically connected drives will automatically be remounted when the machine wakes from safe sleep.
SafeSleep is free and can be downloaded from MacUpdate.

Man traps himself in toilet trying to retrieve cellphone, has time to re-evaluate life priorities (video)
When we say this chap was trapped in the toilet, we don't mean he was stuck in the bathroom, he literally jammed his arm down the porcelain-encased pipe. The poor gentleman from Jiangsu Province in China was clearly in desperate need of his cellphone, as not even the typically repugnant idea of diving down for it was enough to prevent him from trying to chase the thing down. Good news is that emergency services rescued him with only minor cuts and bruises to his arm, though we suspect the injury to his ego will take a long, long time to heal.

Angel's Choice: A Virtual Stock Exchange for iPhone Apps
With almost 300,000 iPhone apps on the market, finding new and interesting apps is getting more and more difficult for users. That's good news for apps that manage to break into the iTunes top 10, as most users use this to find new apps, but sales and downloads fall off quickly for apps that don't make it into the top 10 and good apps often go unnoticed. We have seen a number of interesting app discovery services that try to remedy this situation in recent months, but Angel's Choice (iTunes link) puts a new spin on this by adding Hollywood Stock Exchange-like game mechanics to its app discovery service.
Sponsor
Angel's Choice is basically a virtual stock exchange for new apps where you can invest virtual currency (no real money is exchanged) in up and coming apps. The idea here is that the best and most promising apps will be the most heavily invested in by the players and rise to the top.
The game itself is pretty straightforward. New players get $1,000 in virtual currency and a few missions (invest in 5 apps to begin with, for example) to get started. From within the app, you can browse the Apple app store and see app descriptions and screenshots. Sadly, though, you can't see user comments here. To see these - and to download apps - Angel's Choice takes you to the official app store.
Overall, this is a fun way to find new apps, though to some degree the game mechanics can actually take over as the app discovery functions move into the background. We don't think that this app is the one and only solution to the app discovery problem - after all, the app just creates something akin to a new top 10 list - but if used right, it can be a fun way to find new apps.

Western Digital?s Caviar Green 3TB Hard Drive is World?s Largest Capacity SATA Drive
Western Digital announced today that the company is beginning shipments of a brand new SATA hard drive. The new drive is already labeled as the world’s biggest SATA hard drive, capacity wise. To add to the bullet points, though, WD decided to make the new hard drive part of their Caviar Green line-up of drives, making it an eco-friendly option for all those out there who think about that kind of stuff.
The new 3TB hard drive is the world’s largest capacity SATA hard drive to date. It is also the latest edition to WD’s Caviar Green lineage of SATA hard drives. As the title suggests, you can get the new hard drive at a maximum capacity of 3TB, which is equal to about 3,000GB. WD managed to wrangle up the ridiculous amount of space by placing 750GB of storage per-patter, along with Advanced Format (AF) technology.
The eco-friendly factor comes in the fact that WD’s Caviar Green line-up of drives feature WD GreenPower Technology, which use lower operating temperatures by reducing power consumption. And, while the press release (which you can read below) focuses mainly on the larger 3TB drive, WD is also throwing in a new 2.5TB hard drive as well. You can pick both of them up right now through authorized resellers in the United States. The 2.5TB drive will cost you $189.00, while the 3TB model will run you $239.00.

WD Caviar Green? 3 TB Hard Drives Support the Continuing Demand for Increased Capacity in External Storage and Advanced PC Applications
LAKE FOREST, Calif., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ ? WD (NYSE: WDC) today announced that the company is shipping the world’s largest capacity SATA hard drive. As the latest addition to its WD Caviar Green? family of SATA hard drives (photo), the new hard drives deliver up to a massive 3 terabytes (TB) of storage capacity on a single drive. WD is leading the industry in capacity for SATA hard drives by utilizing 750 GB-per-platter areal density and Advanced Format (AF) technology.
WD Caviar Green drives are an eco-friendly storage solution with WD GreenPower Technology?, which reduces power consumption by enabling lower operating temperatures for increased reliability and decreases acoustical noise for quiet operation. The WD Caviar Green 2.5 TB and 3 TB hard drives are designed for use as secondary external storage and next-generation PC storage in 64-bit-based systems.
Drives with capacities in excess of 2.19 TB currently present barriers for PC hardware, firmware and software. To satisfy the new set of requirements of which users must be aware to successfully integrate larger capacity drives, WD is bundling its WD Caviar Green 2.5 and 3 TB hard drives with an Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI)-compliant Host Bus Adapter (HBA), which will enable the operating system to use a known driver with correct support for large capacity drives. For more information on solving the 2.19 TB drive barrier, please see the WD information sheet at http://products.wdc.com/largecapacitydrives.
“WD remains a leader of hard drive capacity and low power innovation. With our WD Caviar Green drives, we enable energy-conscious customers to build systems with the highest capacities that deliver the optimal balance of system performance, ensured reliability and energy conservation,” said Jim Morris, executive vice president and general manager of WD’s client systems storage group. “Customers will be able to take advantage of this breakthrough capacity point now for secondary external storage in legacy 32-bit systems that run on Microsoft Vista or Windows 7 platforms.”

WD Caviar Green 2.5 TB hard drives (model number WD25EZRSDTL) and 3 TB hard drives (model number WD30EZRSDTL) are available now in the U.S. at select resellers and distributors. MSRP for the WD Caviar Green 2.5 TB hard drive is $189.00 USD and the 3 TB hard drive is $239.00 USD. WD Caviar Green hard drives are covered by a three-year limited warranty. Sony PS3 Netflix app is discless as well
Just like the Nintendo Wii (and as speculated last week), Sony's PS3 in the US and Canada has started to receive the new discless Netflix app, so those who are "affected" ought to see a convenient icon located right below the video tab on the XMB, which will result in full HD movies with 5.1 audio to boot. Once the app is downloaded, you can turn your old discs into coasters for guests when they drop by your pad. Neat, eh? So far there are no major complaints of the update rollout, so kudos to Netflix for making this transition pain-free.

Leatherbound Helps You Compare eBook Prices and Availability
Even as eBook sales soar, the experience of browsing and buying eBooks still leaves a lot to be desired. If you are more interested in a particular title than in your loyalty to a particular eReader, looking for the cheapest version - or even an available version - of a book can be pretty tedious.
Is it even in the iBookstore? Is it cheaper on Amazon's Kindle or on the Barnes & Noble Nook?
Leatherbound addresses that problem by giving users a site where they can look for titles and compare their prices for Kindle, Nook, and iBook. Enter an author name or title, and the site responds with price, availability, and a link to the appropriate eBookstore. Quick and simple.

Leatherbound was created this weekend as part of the Rails Rumble, a programming competition that gives teams 48 hours to build a web app in Ruby on Rails.
Team Leatherbound is comprised of Andrew Dumont, Nathan Carnes, Adrian Pike, and Amiel Martin. Dumont, who is also the Director of Business Development at Seesmic, says that the team has plans down the road to add movies and music to the apps' search capabilities. However, as judging for the Rails Rumble competition is going on now, the project has to stay "as is."
But for a weekend project, Leatherbound's "as is" is pretty good.

Sprint promises WiMAX in NYC on November 1, LA on December 1, and San Francisco a few weeks later
The fact that Sprint and Clearwire have teamed up to deliver WiMAX to New York, LA, and San Francisco isn't news. In fact, we've already seen the networks light up in operational readiness modes on the way to full consumer availability. But now we've got dates, the first specifics that we can recall for these cities. Now, according to both Clearwire and Sprint, New York's WiMAX service will go live on November 1st, LA's on December 1st, and San Francisco sometime around the end of December. We'll see if those early 5Mbps to 7Mbps download / 1.2Mbps upload speeds we've experienced can be maintained once the service meets the crush of the big city horde. Of course, this is nothing but good news for wireless consumers who'll also see Verizon light up its competing LTE network in these cities (38 in total) at about the same time.Sprint promises WiMAX in NYC on November 1, LA on December 1, and San Francisco a few weeks later originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 18 Oct 2010 02:08:00 EDT. There is a great TED website that gives you access to the myriad talks, but the free iPad app is a portable, take anywhere, use anywhere, be inspired anywhere app that gets you access to the best of TED.
To get started, you can get featured talks from the home page, or you can explore by themes or tags. Themes include things like "Ocean Stories" or "The Power of Cities." Click on a theme, and the related TED talks appear. You can also click on tags, like "Cancer," "Evolution," or "Space" and see the related talks. There's also a nifty feature called "inspire me" where you can find talks that are under topics like "jaw-dropping," "funny," or ''courageous." Once you select a topic, you're asked how much time you have, and the talk that fits your requirements will start playing. You can also download talks to watch offline.

Google On Track To Rake In $1 Billion This Year From Android
Google has revealed its third-quarter earnings and has confirmed that it's on track to bring in $1 billion this year in mobile revenue while expecting continued strong growth in the mobile scene. Considering that it doesn't take into account what the search engine giant earned from other platforms such as iOS, Windows Mobile, Symbian and BlackBerry, this is some good money, not to mention the continuing growth of Android. Google's CEO Eric Schmidt also mentioned that Android is much bigger than he could ever have hoped for and can become a hugely profitable business for the company, while also predicting that search on mobile will eventually exceed that of PCs.

Iomega serves up adorable 1.8-inch External USB 3.0 SSD pocket drives
Some might say that you have somewhat of a problem when calling a solid state drive "cute," but what do they know, anyway? Iomega's newest batch of external SSDs are easily the most adorable we've seen, as these 1.8-inchers can just about slip into any oversized Fifth Pocket that you may have. Available in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB sizes, the diminutive drives support USB 3.0 and are built to be lugged around and occasionally dropped, stepped on or used as a stress-relief tool. Specifically, the metal enclosure is engineered to handle drops from up to ten feet, and the 256-bit hardware encryption ensures that only you and your cronies will see what's inside. The company's also tossing in its Protection Suite (loaded with anti-virus, cloning and backup applications), and it'll be hawking these in early November for $229, $399 and $749 from least capacious to most. Oh, and that noise you hear? A hundred million USB 3.0 flash drives getting all sorts of perturbed.

Report: six percent of Americans have made a video call
A recent Pew Research study found that 6% of Americans have participated in a video call with a mobile phone. That number has risen since the iPhone 4's introduction, and is now comparable to the 19% of Americans who have used video conferencing in one way or another.
The study was conducted in mid-August and mid-September, just two months after the iPhone 4 was released in the US, UK, Germany, France and Japan. Pew Research found that wealthy users (those making above US$75,000 per year) under 50 years of age were most likely to have made a video call with a mobile phone.
While new to the US, video phone calling has existed in other countries for some time. However, poor display resolution and call quality has prevented it from catching on in any significant way.
Meanwhile, some iPhone 4 users are unable to place a FaceTime call due to restrictions placed by their carriers. Apple has released a list of iPhone 4 carriers from around the world, with a footnote identifying those that do not officially support FaceTime, including:
Jordan
Qatar
Saudi Arabia
United Arab Emirates
Egypt
We received tips about FaceTime not working in UAE recently, but this is the first official confirmation from Apple that we've found. Apple's language says that FaceTime is not available "From this carrier." We're sure Apple would have FaceTime working everywhere. One wonders why these individual carriers have said no.Report: six percent of Americans have made a video call originally appeared on TUAW on Fri, 15 Oct 2010 16:00:00 EST. AMD to introduce tablet processors
AMD has yet to really make any headway into the tablet game to date, which isn't too surprising, really, considering the company also took a few years before plunging headlong into the netbook arena. The company will however, join the tablet fray when they decide that the tablet market is large enough for them to invest research time as well as money, and will most likely focus on processors with “great graphics and video technology.” This does not mean it will require at least three to four more years before an AMD-powered tablet hits the scene though. At the moment, ARM-based processors as well as those from the Intel Atom line look set to dominate the tablet scene until AMD decides to chip in with their offering.

Viewsonic rolls out 24-inch V3D241wm-LED monitor with 3D glasses
We've yet to see the full wrath of Viewsonic's ambitious 3D plans, but the company has at least now rolled out one new device: the 24-inch V3D241wm-LED 3D monitor. That naturally comes complete with a pair of (active) 3D glasses, and Viewsonic insists that the monitor's 120Hz frame rate and 2ms response time make it ideal for both gaming and movies. You'll also get a pair of built-in two watt speakers, 300 nits of brightness, a supposed 20,000,000:1 contrast ratio, and the usual Eco mode to cut down on power consumption. Still no official word on a release over here, but you can now grab this one in the UK for £330, or about $527.Continue reading Viewsonic rolls out 24-inch V3D241wm-LED monitor with 3D glassesViewsonic rolls out 24-inch V3D241wm-LED monitor with 3D glasses originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 13:19:00 EDT. Verizon iPad deal bundles MiFi; no AT&T 3G in sight
The iPad is coming to Verizon Wireless, but not in the way you might first expect. The carrier has announced that, as of Thursday, October 28, it will be offering three iPad WiFi bundles that package the non-3G version of the iOS slate with a contract-free Verizon MiFi 2200 mobile 3G hostpot.
There’s also a new MiFi tariff for iPad users, with 1GB of data for $20 per month and no agreement commitment. Pricing is $629.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 16GB and MiFi, $729.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 32GB and MiFi and $829.99 for the iPad Wi-Fi 64GB and MiFi.
Alternatively, the WiFi-only iPads will be available through Verizon Wireless stores on their own, with no bundled MiFi. We’re guessing pricing will be the same, in that case, as Apple’s own RRP for the tablets.
Update: Apple Insider spotted more Verizon price plans, including a 3GB plan for $35 and a 5GB plan for $50, with $10 extra for each additional 1GB over the included allowance.

T-mobile to throttle data beyond 5GB
Uh-oh. Any data fiends out there on T-mobile may no longer be able to scoff at AT&T's idea of "unlimited" data, as come October 16, T-mobile are going to start throttling data speeds when a user goes over 5GB.
Of course, data fiends are a special type of person, and most customers won't even notice the change (T-mobile say that it will only affect 1% of its customer base), but given that their previous limit was 10GB, it does feel like you're losing a little something.endowment insurance endowment sell my policy

Blizzard, SteelSeries Co-Develop World Of Warcraft: Cataclysm MMO Gaming Mouse
SteelSeries has developed another World of Warcraft mouse. Hopefully they've learned a few lessons from their previous mouse, which was OK but sorta flawed at the same time. It's called the World of Warcraft: Cataclysm MMO Gaming mouse, and it was co-developed with Blizzard. And given my various conversations with the folks at SteelSeries over the past months, I know that Blizzard doesn't lend its name to just any peripheral, much less take the time to co-develop one.sell my policy

Razer debuts wireless Naga MMO mouse, Ironclad mousepad
While our eye-hand clicking capabilities are usually relegated to "upload image" and "RT" and the occasional "ban commenter," that doesn't stop us from dreaming of a world where we're an elite vid-gamer (that's "video gamer" to any n00bs out there), an entire virtual world at our beck and call. Razer can help us live that dream with its Naga MMO mouse, which has a wild assortment of numbered buttons on its side to be theoretically assigned to those high-powered abilities we've theoretically invested countless hours into obtaining -- or theoretically paid a good price to a gold farmer for. Now Razer has a wireless version of the 5600 dpi laser mouse, using the same wired / wireless tech of the Razer Mamba (which is nice for when a theoretical gaming session stretches beyond the 12 hour continuous use mark the mouse is rated for) to let you plug in at will. There's also a charging dock that conveniently doubles as the 2.4GHz wireless base station. "That's great, Razer," you might say, "but what will I put this mouse on top of?" They're glad you asked. Razer is simultaneously launching a new ultrasmooth mousepad dubbed "Ironclad," built out of a single piece of aluminum. The pad will retail for $60 this month, with the mouse following for $130 in November.
