Google+ for Android update now rolling out - UI changes and bug fixes aplenty

Google+

Google+ is getting some love tonight. The latest version has just been pushed to the Android Market and should be showing up for most folks. If not, you'll just have to sit tight for a little while longer. This release -- created during the Ice Cream Sandwich developement brings a few changes to the table.

Most notably the UI and styling of the app is more in tune with how Android 4.0 looks and for those who loaded up the previously leaked version -- it will look familiar but others changes can be found within as well such as:

  • Battery life improvements
  • Navigation and performance improvements
  • Significant notifications improvements
  • Brand new posting UI
  • Several bug fixes
  • Support for Google Apps users
  • Ability to sign out
  • Add people to a circle from circle profiles

All in all, a nice update that will hopefully correct a lot of concerns some have had. You can fire up the Android Market or grab it from the link below, where you'll also find some more screenshots

How Open Source Can Help Digital Magazines Proliferate

letter-to-jane-ipad-icon.pngThe Web may have opened up and democratized the once top-heavy world of publishing, but the next frontier in digital publications is still young. While anybody can master the tools needed to publish a blog, putting out a rich, magazine-like digital publication for tablets is still cost prohibitive for some.

The folks behind Letter to Jane, an arts magazine for the iPad, are well aware of these challenges. They are not only using KickStarter to help raise funds to produce their next issue, but they're open sourcing the code behind it, offering backers the ability to create their own magazines in the future.

Sponsor

Systems like Adobe's Digital Publishing Suite (DPS) can be used to build some impressive, deeply interactive tablet publications. But the cost of such solutions can be out of reach for smaller, independent publishers. They can also impose some technical and design limitations that are not present when one is coding from scratch.

For those would-be publishers who want to get started with iPad development, Letter to Jane creator Tim Moore is giving away the XCode project files to anybody who donates to cover the production costs of his next issue.

"I decided to give away the source code to donors, targeted towards those kinds of designers who like myself, really want to do something native, but are having a hard time getting started," Moore said.

Some Coding Required

ipad-magazine-ltj.jpgThis is far from a drag-and-drop, WYSIWYG app-building tool, as Moore is quick to point out. He's literally handing over the raw code, which is marked up with comments describing which lines of code do what. That code includes basic functionality such as animations and transitions, playing back video and audio files, and social sharing of content. Those using it to build new publications are responsible for getting their own content and designs into it, as well as any additional functionality they may want. Even the most simple reworking of Moore's work will require a working knowledge of iOS development and an Apple developer account.

It's also worth noting that the finished product will not be a dynamically-updated news app or Conde Nast-style magazine that sits in Newsstand is updated with new content automatically. Each new issue is its own stand-alone application. That may be a deal-killer for some wanting to get into tablet publishing, but for anybody with a small budget and a desire to get started, this approach isn't a bad way to do, and it has the advantage of honing one's iOS development chops along the way.

In Time - The Game app free today to celebrate film release

Fans of Justin Timberlake are quivering in their Ugg boots today for the release of the sci-fi thriller In Time. While waiting for the movie to start, they can also download a companion app to the movie for free.

In Time - The Game depicts a "near-future world where time is a finite commodity that can be earned or taken away. Score points by sprinting, jumping and dodging waves of obstacles & assailants across often-hostile city streets on the way to your destination before your time runs out. Players can acquire valuable time by collecting 'time capsules,' or lose time if apprehended by the 'Minutemen.' Players can multiply their scores by giving time to those who most need it, but at the risk of the player's running out of time himself."

The app features actual scenes from the movie, 16 missions, 30 unlockable achievements and Game Center integration for competing with friends. Just remember, though; the app is free today only. Don't run out of time!

Another Defence of Indy Fails To Make A Case

Bob Kravitz, writing in the Indy Star in defence of the Indianapolis MotoGP Course: Was the track slippery? Yes. That happens when a track gets repaved. Adjust and move on. MotoGP Testing Limits To Be Abolished For 2012

Testing for the MotoGP class is set to undergo a radical shake up for 2012, with the current restrictions on testing to be abolished. According to both Italian magazine website MotoSprint and the Italian sports daily Corriere dello Sport, the Grand Prix Commission will approve a plan to scrap the testing limits imposed after the global financial crisis in 2008, and allow MotoGP riders to test the bikes as often as they like, within a few set limits.

Apple-themed pumpkin carving for Halloween

The good folks at MacRumors have done us all a favor and rounded up all of the Apple-themed pumpkins they've seen this year so far. Most of them, like the one carved by Sbrocket seen above, have focused on Steve Jobs in some way, which makes sense given that everyone's still thinking about Steve and his influence. But all of these pumpkins are very well done -- I'd love to see them sitting out at a party or on a curb this Halloween.

If you're carving a pumpkin and you happen to end up with an Apple-related design (sure, the Apple logo is pretty easy, but maybe try an app icon or an old Mac design?), be sure to take a picture and send it to us here at TUAW. We've love to check it out! You can post it to Flickr with a #tuaw tag, or give us a Twitter reply @TUAW.
