Interview: Stoner's Crew Chief Cristian Gabbarini On Getting Heat Into The Bridgestones
If anyone was in any doubt about the pivotal role that the spec Bridgestone tires play in MotoGP, this year will have made their significance abundantly clear. The stiff tires offer unbelievable levels of grip, but only once up to temperature, feeling vague and distant while still cold. That presents riders with a paradox: to go fast, the tires have to be warm, but to get heat into the Bridgestones - the front especially - you have to push it hard to make it work.
Championship leader Casey Stoner has proven to be a master at handling this dilemma, seemingly achieving astonishing levels of lean angle and getting his Repsol Honda RC212V turned faster than anyone else on the grid. When asked about the method he uses for getting heat into the tires, Stoner has spoken several times about using the throttle to load the front.
To an untrained observer - and even to people who do have the training - this doesn't seem to make sense. After all, use of the throttle makes the front wheel want to lift, doing the polar opposite of loading the front Bridgestone. To understand exactly what Stoner means by "using the throttle to load the front," we turned to the man who knows exactly what the Australian is doing when he rides the bike: Stoner's long-time crew chief Cristian Gabbarini. Gabbarini, who worked with Stoner at Ducati, and joined HRC when the Australian moved to Honda, took time at Brno to answer our questions. Here's what he had to tell us:
Runner's 13-mile trip is a tribute to Steve Jobs
In the days since the resignation of Steve Jobs as CEO of Apple, Inc., we've seen an amazing outpouring of love for the man and his legacy. But none of those tributes has had quite the impact of marathon runner Joseph Tame accomplished with an iPhone (actually two), the Runkeeper app and service, and his own two legs.
Tame ran a half-marathon around the heart of Tokyo with a specific route in mind -- one that approximated the shape of the Apple logo. The run took Tame about two hours, and the end result was the Runkeeper GPS plot seen above. In case you're wondering, the bite out of the Apple is the Imperial Palace.
TUAW has featured Tame's exploits before: he's also the creator of a rig that allows him to carry four iPhones, an Android handset, and an iPad while running so that he can live stream his marathon runs. Tame told New Launches that the iPhone "really has changed my life here in Tokyo. It means I can go anywhere without getting lost, I have all my data with me at all times, I'm potentially in touch with thousands of friends and family members around the world at all times, and I have access to any information I might need to do what I need to do."
Joseph Tame definitely knows how to say "Thank You, Steve Jobs" in style.

SigNote lets you personalize your photos right on your iPhone
SigNote is a US $0.99 app that lets you add symbols or hand drawn text to any of the photos on your phone. You can grab symbols or graphics from a large on-line library accessed through the app, or you can jot something down on a piece of paper, capture it with your iPhone camera, and layer it on top of your images.
Once you have the graphic, it can be re-sized, moved around or rotated. The app supports up to 7 layers, and you can erase any mistakes you made. Images can be saved back to your photo roll, or emailed or sent to Facebook. Help is built into the app, and there is even a video demonstration.
This is a clever idea for an app. It's not expensive, and provides a clever and easy way to personalize your photos without having to use an external editor like Elements or Photoshop. An update to the app, released today, adds some extra foregrounds and allows the user to adjust the size of the eraser for precise editing. The only improvement I would offer is I'd like you to be able to draw on screen rather than have to find a piece of paper and a marker to create your own graphic.
Check the gallery for some shots of the app in action.

Adobe releases a PDF creator for iOS
Given the history between Adobe and Apple, this might be kind of surprising, but it happened anyway. Adobe has released an app for iPhone and iPad called CreatePDF that allows you to make and edit your own PDF files, right on iOS. The app can be used to open up any number of document formats, and then uses Adobe's own conversion services to assemble them however you want into a full PDF document. The app can open everything from Word documents and Excel spreadsheets to images and OpenOffice documents, and converted PDFs can be sent off as email attachments, or even sent to other apps on the iOS device.
The app is available as a $9.99 universal download. It's good to see this kind of thing available -- it just means there's even more functionality for iOS in terms of not just viewing documents, but also building and creating them while mobile.

Apple wins expedited trial against Samsung in California
Reserve the date, folks, and grab some popcorn. The biggest lawsuit of next year opens on July 30, 2012. That's the day Apple's Federal lawsuit against Samsung will go to trial, according to FOSS Patents.
The date of the trial is a big win for Apple as most lawsuits of similar complexity in the Northern District of California take 23 months to get to trial. Apple v. Samsung will go to trial in only 15.5 months.
The trial will involve an astounding 43 different claims by the two companies. It's the number of claims that leads FOSS Patents to note that given the "complexity of Apple v. Samsung, this is really a pretty ambitious schedule and, therefore, a major win for Apple."
FOSS Patents also notes that Apple's Federal claim against Samsung over intellectual property violations of its iPhone and iPad is just one of the 19 lawsuits between the two companies in 9 countries around the world. Just yesterday a German court upheld an injunction against Samsung tablets following an EU-wide preliminary injunction against Samsung Galaxy smartphones by a Dutch court the day before. Earlier this month, the Galaxy Tab 10.1 launch was suspended in Australia due to similar litigation.

Stoner Wins the Indianapolis Moto GP
Casey Stoner made it three MotoGP wins in a row as he headed a Honda one-two at the Indianapolis Grand Prix and further increased his stranglehold on the world championship lead.
The Australian was beaten off the line by his team-mate Dani Pedrosa and dropped behind Lorenzo after running wide at Turn 2 on the opening lap.
But after using the grunt of his RCV212 and a tow to pass Lorenzo’s Yamaha for second spot on lap three, he pulled off an identical move on Pedrosa to hit the front before the one third distance mark and pulled away to a comfortable 4.828-second win. It was Stoner’s seventh win of the year and the 30th of his career.
Front row starter Ben Spies endured a terrible opening lap after starting badly and then being shoved out wide onto the kerbs at Turn 3, causing him to drop to ninth.
The Yamaha rider quickly passed Colin Edwards and Alvaro Bautista and then took advantage when Nicky Hayden – the only man not to use the hardest compound front Bridgestone available – slid wide at Turn 1 to move up to sixth.
He then was merciless in scything past Andrea Dovizioso’s Honda and Marco Simoncelli’s Gresini Honda – which had been as high as third during the early stages – to move up to fourth.
Next on his radar was his team-mate Lorenzo, whom he nailed under braking at Turn 1 on lap 17 to secure the final podium spot.
In finishing fourth, Lorenzo saw his deficit to Stoner increase from 28 points to 44 while Dovizioso came home fifth with Bautista an excellent sixth for Suzuki.
Edwards came home seventh on his Tech 3 Yamaha, ahead of Randy de Puniet’s Pramac Ducati. The Frenchman passed Hector Barbera’s Aspar Ducati on the final lap to secure the position.
Barbera, who had also fallen behind Hiroshi Aoyama, then crashed at the last corner of the race as he tried to wrest ninth spot from the Japanese Gresini rider.
His crash allowed Valentino Rossi to complete the top 10 after a disastrous race for the Italian. Rossi was suffering from a gearbox glitch and fell to the back of the field early on after running off the track and having to stop before rejoining.
On a terrible day for Ducati machinery, Rossi’s team-mate Hayden was a lapped 14th after running into tyre problems. Pramac rider Loris Capiross and AB Cardion’s Karel Abraham failed to make the finish.
Simoncelli was another to experience rubber issues, the Italian slipping back to 12th by the chequered flag.

Walt Mossberg reflects on Steve Jobs' legacy
Everyone is reflecting upon Steve Jobs' times at Apple, and Walt Mossberg is no exception. In this Wall Street Journal News Hub video, Walt reiterates his assertion that Steve Jobs' departure is "...the end of an era," but he's quick to add, "I don't mean by that that this is the end of Apple's success." You can read more of Walt's thoughts about Steve's resignation in his post on AllThingsD.
Mossberg believes Jobs will be considered a historical figure due to his business success and his role as an iconic inventor. He also teases the future, saying that products "Apple doesn't currently make" are being worked on now.
It's not clear from the video if that's just conjecture on Mossberg's part, or if he has knowledge about what those future products may be. The entire video is interesting, as it features a prolific tech journalist speaking about one of the most prolific inventors of our time. Check it out below.

Mid-2011 MacBook Air reportedly about to launch in China
Fortune's Apple 2.0 is reporting that the mid-2011 MacBook Air (launched just over a month ago in the US) is set to launch in China in the next week or so. According to analyst Brian White of Ticonderoga Securities, this week's Hong Kong launch of the MacBook Air was met with, "long lines and stock outs of certain new MacBook Air models," which is an indication of what's to come when the MacBook Air launches in Greater China.
White says, "Our field checks indicate that several Apple authorized resellers in Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen are experiencing stock outs of the previous version of MacBook Air, which we believe is in preparation for the launch of the new MacBook Air." White goes on to say that the MacBook Air could launch "as early as next week at some stores."
Either way, with iPhone and Mac sales booming in Asia, fake Apple Stores and fake Steve Jobs biographies cropping up aplenty in China, and the ever increasing rumors surrounding the iPhone hitting China Telecom, it's clear China is going to be a large market for Apple in the future.

Mozilla Chair Acknowledges Enterprises Do Count for Firefox
Exactly what will end up being the very final, last word on the subject of Mozilla Firefox's expedited release system, may yet be seen. Yesterday, however, the Mozilla Foundation's chairperson, Mitchell Baker, weighed in with what appears to be an attempt at finality, albeit a dualistic one. On the one hand, Baker wrote, Firefox should be less like software and more like the Internet.
On the other hand, enterprises do count in determining how software like Firefox should continue to improve.
"Philosophically, I do not believe a product that moves at the speed of traditional desktop software can be effective at enabling an Internet where things happen in real time," wrote Baker on her personal blog. "If we want the browser to be the interface for the Internet, we need to make it more like the Internet."
Baker tried to gloss over the problem many Firefox contributors have pointed out in recent days: that independent developers of Firefox add-ons may not easily make the adjustment to a six-week major release cycle. She said that add-ons were managed through Web pages that structurally aren't any different from any other kind of Web page, making them easier to manage.
She used that as an example of expediting the browser management process while at the same time addressing user concerns, and here is where she invoked enterprises. "We need to listen carefully to those who are experiencing difficulties. We need to be creative and try to find practical ways of alleviating these difficulties if we can. This is true for the enterprise use case, and it's true for the add-on experience. I know that's not a perfect answer, and it's not a promise that we can meet everyone's needs perfectly. Despite this, I believe the rapid release process is the right direction."
This comment comes a few months after Firefox product manager Asa Dotzler made his now infamous proclamation, "Enterprise has never been (and I'll argue, shouldn't be) a focus."
In a late effort to determine how many add-on developers the rapid release cycle may impact, Mozilla has posted a survey whose questions include, "Are you aware that desktop Firefox will be moving to a multi-process architecture like the one used by Firefox for mobile?" and "If Mozilla provided a marketplace for add-ons, would you be interested in selling a premium version of a new or existing add-on?"
